Bus Driver - Seasonal
The Parks Department is hiring a seasonal Bus Driver for the Summer Special Needs Summer Camp.JOB SUMMARYThis position is responsible for supervising the safe transport of children to and from events/ program, etc. and making sure the bus is inspected and in proper working condition, follows all safety regulations, reports and complies with accident / evacuation procedures, and ensures bus has been inspected within timely guidelines.The bus driver will transport students to and from camp sites and other activities during camp day and return them safely in the afternoon., should be able follow a daily schedule while transporting people on regular routes along city or suburban streets. ** If using a Sumner County bus -the bus driver MUST already be a current employee for them, maintain trip reports, and turn in on time. MAJOR DUTIESEnsures the safety and well-being of children and adults being transported to and from the program and on field tripsArranges for the annual inspection of the bus(es) before program begins to transport children; assures, with prior approval, purchases and or repairs are made pursuant to state inspectionCompletes a comprehensive written inspection of the us daily, reporting any conditions of concern to the Director, or delegated staff, before transporting children.Ensures that the communication device (e.g. 2-way radio, cellular phone is in proper working condition before each tripArranges for and ensures completion of routine maintenance of bus ( e.g. Oil change) transporting the bus to and from maintenance and/or repair facilities.Ensures the bus always has sufficient fuel.Develop and follow efficient and safe written bus routes that ensure no child will be on the bus more than one hour.Operates bus in such a way that road and safety regulations are always followed; and reports any traffic violations to the Director immediatelyEnsure that all children are in age-appropriate safety restraints if provided on the bus during transportationMaintains and ensures that there is compliance with numbers allowed on busesFollows safe bus loading and unloading proceduresFollows procedures to guarantee no child is left alone on the bus without supervision at any timeKeeps the bus clean and free of debris, follow bus cleaning proceduresRoutinely invents bus emergencies and first aid supplies and equipment, reports need to the Director, or delegated staff personPrepares aides and children for bus drills and ensures bus evacuation drills are held at least 1 X per program and documented in writingIn case of emergencies/ accidents, evacuation of children is followed according to written and practiced proceduresIn the event of an accident, assured that medical emergency procedures are followed, completes a written accident report as required Ability to work under minimal supervision- being self-motivated, accountable, and responsibleIncorporates safe work practices in job performancePerforms other duties as assignedKNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS REQUIREDKnowledge of the general rules of the road and transporting of campersAbility to sit and/or stand, be active, and endure a variety of temperature conditions for prolonged periods of timeKnowledge of city and department procedures and policies, relevant local, state and federal laws related to driving a busSkills in oral and written communication; skill in planning, organizing, analyzing, decision making, and problem solvingSCOPE AND EFFECTThe purpose of this position is to provide overall supervision of transportation for the special needs program ensuring safety before, during, and after any transporting of campers.PHYSICAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENTThe work is typically performed while sitting, standing, or stooping. The employee occasionally lifts light and heavy objects.Must be able to assist and/or maintain camper during meltdowns.WORK ENVIRONMENT The work is typically performed at school or outdoors at park facilities. The employee may be exposed to inclement weather.SUPERVISORY CONTROLSThis position reports directly to the Recreation Supervisor SUPERVISORY AND MANAGEMENT RESPONSIBILITYDirectly supervise ALL people riding the bus. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the parks department's policies and guidelines. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSMost employers prefer drivers to have a high school diploma or equivalent.Must have a CDL licenseAll bus drivers must have a passenger (P) endorsement, and school bus drivers must also have a school bus (S) endorsement. Getting the P and S endorsements requires additional knowledge and driving tests administered by a certified examinerMany states require all bus drivers to be 18 years of age or older and those who drive across state lines to be at least 21 years oldBus drivers can have their CDL suspended if they are convicted of a felony involving the use of a motor vehicle or of driving under the influence of alcohol or drugsMost bus drivers are required to undergo background checks before they are hiredGeneral knowledge in varying disabilitiesMust be at least 18 years of age by date of hireHigh school diploma or general education diploma (GED) requiredCPR/First Aid Certification preferredPrior experience working with children helpful Available to work weekdays (regular and reliable attendance)Skill in oral and written communication; ability to perform basic mathematical calculationsFLSA Status: Seasonal Pay Grade: 4
