Position Purpose

Key Responsibilities
Review and abstract medical records for emergency department and observation encounters to identify appropriate ICD-10, CPT and HCPCS codes.
Ensure complete and accurate charge capture of ED and Observation services, including procedures, supplies, injections, infusions, and other billable items supported by the physician orders and clinical documentation.
Analyze charge processing functions and recommend opportunities for process and policy improvements that align with payer and governmental requirements.
Monitor real-time reconciliation for ED and Observation visits to ensure accurate and timely charge posting.
Work closely with revenue integrity, billing, and coding compliance teams to support optimal revenue capture and audit readiness.
Stay current with changes in coding regulations, payer requirements, and organizational protocol by participating in ongoing coding education, compliance reviews, and audits as needed.
Maintains strict confidentiality; adheres to all HIPAA guidelines / regulations.
Performs other related duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested
Qualifications
Education
High School Diploma or GED equivalent
Certified Coding Specialist - AHIMA (CCS); or Certified Outpatient Coder - AAPC (COC)
Experience
Minimum of 2 years of experience in coding and/or charge capture.
Knowledge and Skills
Strong knowledge of CPT, HCPCS and ICD-10-CM coding.
Familiar with NCCI edits, modifiers, and outpatient coding compliance.
Understanding of emergency department workflows and services.
High attention to detail and accuracy.
Ability to utilize resources in an organized manner, including technological resources and programs.
Effective interpersonal and customer relation skills.
Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
Proven working knowledge and experience with Microsoft Office and other computer software.
Preferences
Education: Associate or bachelor's degree in health information management or related field.
Experience: Experience with charge reconciliation software and EMR system (e.g. MediTech, Lynx)
Work Requirements
Reaching and/or working above and below shoulder level.
Ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
Walking up to 10% of the scheduled shift.
Sitting at desk up to 90% of the scheduled shift with frequent bending, squatting, kneeling, standing.
