We operate with a flat structure, move quickly, and give people meaningful responsibility for their work.This is an opportunity to help build the embedded platform powering thousands of connected industrial devices and real-time systems deployed in advanced factories.The RoleHarmoni is looking for a hands-on Embedded Linux & Edge Platform Engineer to help build the software and hardware platform powering our connected industrial devices.This role sits at the intersection of embedded Linux, edge computing, containerized applications, device infrastructure, and hardware integration. You will work across the device stack—from bootloaders, kernels, and operating-system images to containers, applications, hardware interfaces, secure deployment, and over-the-air updates.You will contribute to our Yocto- and BitBake-based Linux distribution, Docker application stack, OTA infrastructure, embedded hardware, and applications written in languages including C, Python, JavaScript, and TypeScript.This is not a narrowly scoped firmware or hardware-design position. We are looking for an engineer who understands the device as a complete system and can move comfortably between embedded Linux, containers, application code, hardware, networking, and device operations.You will work closely with Harmoni’s engineering team, co-founders, Product, and Deployment. You must be comfortable working independently, navigating unfamiliar problems, and contributing across multiple layers of the stack.What You’ll Work OnEmbedded Linux and Device PlatformDevelop Harmoni’s embedded Linux platform using Yocto, BitBake, and related tooling.Maintain recipes, layers, board support packages, system configuration, and build infrastructure.Configure and troubleshoot U-Boot, kernels, kernel modules, and device trees.Support ARM-based platforms, board revisions, and device configurations.Improve system reliability, security, performance, boot time, and maintainability.Diagnose issues across the operating system, hardware, containers, and applications.Containers, OTA, and Fleet InfrastructureBuild, deploy, and troubleshoot Docker containers in resource-constrained edge environments.Improve container lifecycle management, networking, storage, logging, and recovery.Help develop reliable deployment patterns for interdependent services on remote devices.Contribute to Harmoni’s complex OTA and fleet-management infrastructure.Improve updates for operating-system images, containers, applications, and configuration.Design for intermittent connectivity, power interruption, failed updates, compatibility, and rollback.Improve staged rollouts, device targeting, observability, diagnostics, and recovery.Systems and Application DevelopmentBuild software across Harmoni’s edge application stack.Work in the language best suited to the problem, including C, Python, JavaScript, and TypeScript.Develop system services, device agents, command-line tools, APIs, diagnostics, and automation.Integrate applications with Linux services, containers, hardware, and cloud infrastructure.Write maintainable, well-tested software across different parts of the stack.Hardware Design and IntegrationContribute to hardware design, prototyping, board bring-up, and validation.Create or review schematics and PCB layouts using Altium Designer.Support component selection, design reviews, testing, and production readiness.Integrate ARM systems, accelerators, sensors, cameras, controllers, and industrial equipment.Develop and troubleshoot SPI, UART, USB, Ethernet, GPIO, and other interfaces.Diagnose problems using software tools, debuggers, logic analyzers, oscilloscopes, and other lab equipment.Help integrate GPUs, TPUs, and other accelerators used for edge AI workloads.Reliability and Engineering OperationsHelp build systems that operate reliably in demanding industrial environments.Improve monitoring, logging, diagnostics, provisioning, and remote troubleshooting.Contribute to secure boot, image signing, device identity, and credential management.Improve build systems, CI/CD pipelines, automated testing, and release tooling.Support deployments and investigate issues in customer environments.Document platform architecture, development workflows, and operational procedures.What Success Looks LikeIn Your First 90 DaysYou develop a strong understanding of Harmoni’s technology and device architecture.You can build, configure, provision, update, and troubleshoot a Harmoni device.You become familiar with our Yocto environment, container stack, and OTA architecture.You contribute production-quality improvements and help resolve issues across the stack.You establish productive relationships across Engineering, Product, and Deployment.Over TimeHarmoni can reliably deploy and operate thousands of connected industrial devices.Device updates are safe, observable, and recoverable.Engineers can build, test, and release device software efficiently.Devices remain dependable through network failures, interrupted updates, and power loss.The platform supports new hardware, applications, and AI workloads.Field issues can be diagnosed and resolved remotely with minimal customer disruption.What We’re Looking ForWe do not expect candidates to have worked with every technology in our stack. We are looking for engineers with deep experience in several of these areas and the ability to learn the rest.Five or more years of relevant experience in embedded Linux, embedded systems, edge computing, or device infrastructure.Strong experience developing and debugging embedded Linux systems.Experience with Yocto, BitBake, or comparable embedded Linux build systems.Deep proficiency with Linux, shell scripting, and command-line tooling.Practical experience with Docker and containerized applications.Proficiency in one or more languages, including C, Python, JavaScript, or TypeScript.Experience with ARM systems, bootloaders, kernels, device trees, or board support packages.Familiarity with interfaces such as SPI, UART, USB, Ethernet, or GPIO.Strong debugging skills across hardware, operating systems, containers, applications, and networks.Experience building or supporting software deployed on physical devices.Comfort working independently in a fast-moving environment.Strong communication and collaboration skills.Willingness and ability to work full-time in Harmoni’s New York City office.Bonus PointsExperience with Balena, openBalena, balenaOS, or a similar platform.Experience developing OTA infrastructure for remote device fleets.Experience with rollback-capable device updates.Experience with hardware design, board bring-up, and validation.Experience creating schematics or PCB layouts in Altium Designer.Experience moving embedded hardware from prototype through production.Experience with secure boot, TPMs, hardware identity, or image signing.Experience operating large fleets of connected devices.Experience with edge AI, computer vision, GPUs, TPUs, or NPUs.Experience with manufacturing technology, robotics, automation, or control systems.You do not need to match every bonus qualification.
