Long Term Substitute-Grammar School Music Teacher

Position Summary : The Long Term Substitute Music Teacher at Ascent Classical Academy will serve the Grammar School faculty from mid-August through late October/early November, teaching students in grades 1st, 3rd, and 5th. This position follows a part-time daily schedule of approximately 8:00 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Working within the framework of our content-rich curriculum and in collaboration with colleagues, the Long Term Substitute Music Teacher will deliver engaging, high-quality instruction that fosters a love of music and supports the intellectual and moral development of students. Lesson materials, including PowerPoint presentations, will be provided; however, the teacher is expected to implement these lessons effectively, cultivate a positive and orderly classroom environment, and inspire students to develop their musical abilities, creativity, and appreciation for a wide range of musical styles. In keeping with the mission of Ascent Classical Academy and its partnership with Hillsdale College's Barney Charter School Initiative, the teacher will encourage both academic growth and the formation of good habits, character, and attentiveness in each student.Essential Functions:Implement provided, content-rich music lessons in alignment with curriculum guidelines and expectationsDeliver high-quality music instruction to 1st, 3rd, and 5th grade students, fostering musical skill development, creativity, and appreciation for a variety of musical stylesMaintain a structured, orderly, and engaging classroom environment that supports student learning and character formationAssist with daily operations of the school, such as supervision of beginning and end of day routines and procedures, lunch and recess times, and other transitional periodsBuild positive relationships with students by encouraging participation, managing classroom behavior, and supporting individual growth in both musical ability and attentivenessAdapt instruction as needed to meet the varying needs of students, including providing support or extension opportunitiesReinforce foundational music concepts such as rhythm, melody, and vocal or instrumental performance through consistent and thoughtful instructionAssist with classroom organization and preparation, including setting up materials, distributing resources, and maintaining a tidy learning environmentSupervise students during assigned times, including arrival, dismissal, and transitions, as neededRespectfully and effectively guide students using classical pedagogy and classroom management practicesSupport the intellectual and moral development of students in keeping with the mission of Ascent Classical Academy and Hillsdale College's Barney Charter School InitiativeCollaborate with Students Services team to meet requirements of special educational plans, such as IEPs, 504s, and othersMaintain confidentiality in student records and communicationsMaintain a collegial, professional relationship with students, parents, and colleagues as a partner in the community of learnersEffectively communicate with school leadership and team members regarding student progress, needs, and classroom updatesDemonstrate consistent and reliable attendance by adhering to assigned work hours and following proper procedures for absences or tardinessOther duties as assignedPosition Requirements:High school diploma or equivalent requiredCommitment to the policies, mission, and vision of ACACSConviction in the values of a rigorous liberal arts educationCommitment to model moral character in line with the school's core virtuesAdherence to all ACACS policies, including but not limited to the Employee Handbook, Family Handbook, and applicable school and board policiesProficiency in English verbal and writtenProficiency in a variety of teaching strategies and techniques to accommodate diverse learning styles and abilitiesExcellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills with the ability to effectively articulate information and issuesStrong leadership skills with the ability to motivate and inspire students to achieve their personal bestProven ability to work in a fast-paced and deadline-oriented environment with superior organization and computer skillsAbility to develop positive and professional relationships with students, parents, colleagues, and team membersAbility to provide excellent customer service while maintaining confidentiality and professionalismCreative problem-solving skills and adaptability to challengesPatience, reliability, and a positive attitudeDemonstrate consistent and reliable attendance by adhering to assigned work hours, reporting on time, and following proper procedures for absences or tardiness to ensure minimal disruption to students, colleagues, and school operationsWillingness to perform other related duties as assignedPhysical Requirements:Must be able to lift up to 25 poundsMust be able to traverse the classroom and school and adjust one's tone and height by bending or leaning in order to teach each childProlonged periods of sitting at a desk, working on a computer, or standing to teachMust be able to supervise outdoor activities
