Code Enforcement Officer
Job Description
The County of Orange is seeking a Code Enforcement Officer for a long-term assignment supporting code enforcement operations. This role is ideal for professionals with experience investigating public nuisance complaints, providing excellent customer service, and working independently to promote compliance with applicable codes and regulations.
The Code Enforcement Officer will be responsible for responding to community concerns, conducting field inspections, documenting violations, and working with property owners and residents to achieve voluntary compliance.
Schedule
Full-Time Assignment
Eight (8) 9-hour days, Monday through Thursday
Eight (8) hour alternating Fridays
No weekends required
Pay Rate: $30–$35 per hour (depending on experience)
What You'll Do
Investigate and address code violations and public nuisance complaints
Manage cases involving:
Trash, debris, and illegal dumping
Graffiti
Noise complaints
Other neighborhood nuisance violations
Conduct field inspections and document findings accurately
Communicate with residents, property owners, businesses, and County staff regarding compliance requirements
Educate the public and encourage voluntary compliance with applicable regulations
Prepare notices, maintain case files, and update enforcement records
Exercise sound judgment and professionalism when handling community concerns
Manage assigned cases independently and follow through on enforcement activities

Experience working in code enforcement or a related public service field
Knowledge of code enforcement practices, investigation procedures, and compliance processes
Strong customer service and communication skills
Ability to interact professionally with the public in challenging situations
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
Ability to work independently in the field and manage assigned workload

Experience and Education Requirements
Required Experience
Minimum of one (1) to two (2) years of experience working in code enforcement
Preferred Experience
Prior experience with a city, county, or public agency
Experience handling public nuisance complaints and community compliance issues
Preferred Certifications
Basic Code Enforcement I
Intermediate Code Enforcement II
PC 832 (Powers of Arrest)
CPR & AED Certification
First Aid Certification
Additional Requirements
Valid California driver's license with a clean driving record
Ability to successfully pass a background investigation and/or Live Scan
Provide professional references as required
