Learn more about this agency Help DutiesPerforms Preservationist Helper duties such as:Assist with preservation carpentry including structural framing, reconstruction of windows and doors, and finish carpentry using a variety of power and hand tools.Assist with preservation masonry including chiseling, mortar analysis and mixing, and repointing of historic features using hand tools.Assist with preservation painting, plastering, metalwork, and condition assessment.Assist with historic preservation roofing including repairs to flashing, shingles, and architectural elements while working on scaffolding.Operate a light truck to move and transport persons and material to and from worksite.Physical Demands: There is considerable physical exertion related to actions such as lifting, pushing, pulling, or carrying objects of various sizes, weights, and shapes. There is considerable standing, stooping, lifting, and bending. Because of the multi-faceted craft aspects of this position, work is frequently performed in stretching, cramped, or awkward positions. Fieldwork magnifies the physical effort required to perform the duties of this position and reflect actual restoration project environments. The incumbent performs various duties from ladders, scaffolding and platforms, and where the materials and equipment worked on are in hard-to-reach places. The incumbent also works under structures, which require him/her to work overhead or in a stretched, cramped, or awkward position. Arm movement is considerable when nailing and using such tools as handsaws and planers. The incumbent may occasionally lift and carry items that weigh 50 pounds or more. Backcountry work may require the incumbent to hike or ride by horseback to the job site in remote locations over rough terrain.Working Conditions: Work is performed inside and outside at field/construction sites, in all types of weather. In the shop, the incumbent is exposed to noise and sawdust in the air, as well as cuts from hand or power tools and danger from flying splinters or chips. The use of some historic preservation tools and equipment may require specific knowledge and skill, as well as the use of protective equipment in the shop or at the field site. The incumbent must work at elevations from 2,000 to 10,000 feet. Temperatures vary from 20 to 105 degrees. Winter snow depths may vary from 2 to 6 feet with icy driving conditions involved. The incumbent may be exposed to snow and ice conditions in winter, rain, and extreme heat in summer. This includes work experience performing the following duties: Assisting in maintaining and/or preserving historic properties. Working under the direction of others to help with the preservation, stabilization, restoration, and maintenance of historic structures. Ability to assist journey level preservationists to perform tasks on all of the following skills: roofing, painting, masonry, and carpentry. Related skills may include surface preparation, rough and finish carpentry, cleaning, mortar mixing, minor repairs to stone masonry, and /or painting work. Experience assisting others with some or all of the following: repointing masonry walls, chimneys, fireplaces, or other masonry features, stabilizing and/or repairing wood frame and timber structures, restoring building elements such as windows, doors, siding, and trim, using a combination of modern and historic techniques and materials which may no longer be commercially available. Have utilized hand and power tools which include: hammers, saws, wrenches, pliers, screwdrivers, drills, tape measures, squares, chisels, drawknives, calipers, and traditional carpentry tools.If your knowledge and ability in the SCREEN OUT factor above is not sufficient, you will receive no further consideration.
