Postdoctoral Teaching Fellow in GIS and climate change
Smith College: Massachusetts: Department of Geosciences Location Northampton, MA Open Date Feb 05, 2026 Deadline Mar 11, 2026 at 11:59 PM Eastern Time Description The Department of Geosciences and the Center for the Environment, Ecological Design and Sustainability (CEEDS) at Smith College invite applications for a teaching postdoctoral fellowship in climate change and GIS, to begin July 1, 2026. The initial term of appointment is one year, with possibility for reappointment for a second year pending successful performance. Teaching responsibilities include teaching one course per year in the Geosciences department: GEO 104: Global Climate Change: Exploring the Past, the Present, and Options for the Future in Fall 2026; and GEO/ENV 150: Mapping Our World: An Introduction to Geographic Information Systems in Fall 2027. The candidate will also be expected to support curricular and co-curricular activities in the Center's Spatial Analysis Lab (SAL). Depending on the candidate's experience and interests, these may include but are not limited to: giving guest lectures in classes, preparing and providing support on lab exercises, offering workshops, mentoring student associates, and offering a one- or two- credit class during Smith's three week January interterm. The candidate can expect to have fewer responsibilities with the SAL in the fall and more in the spring and summer. The candidate will also have time and support to conduct their own research on some aspect of climate change. A Ph.D. in Geosciences, Geography, or a closely related field is required, and candidates must have a Ph.D. in hand or all requirements for the degree fulfilled by the start of the appointment. A commitment to excellence in teaching and undergraduate research is essential. Candidates from groups underrepresented in the Geosciences and GIS are encouraged to apply.In addition to a competitive benefits package, pay for this role is typically between $60,600-$62,200 annually covering the middle half of market compensation.
