Job Summary Senior Substation Engineer responsible for designing, implementing, and supporting testing of electrical substations to meet safety, operational requirements, and project specifications. This role is fully remote; travel as needed (~10%). Responsibilities Design and review electrical substation layouts, equipment selection, and specifications in accordance with project requirements and industry standards. Review load flow, short-circuit, and relay coordination studies to ensure reliability and efficiency. Review detailed engineering drawings, schematics, and technical specifications using AutoCAD Electrical or Bluebeam. Coordinate with internal and external stakeholders (utility companies, contractors, regulatory agencies) to obtain approvals and permits. Review and evaluate vendor proposals for technical accuracy against substation component specifications. Identify opportunities for design upgrades, improvements, and provide value‑engineering solutions. Provide technical support during construction, testing, and commissioning, ensuring compliance with schedules and quality standards. Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues related to substation equipment and systems, both remotely and onsite. Perform root‑cause analysis and recommend corrective actions for substation failures. Stay informed about emerging technologies and best practices in substation design, automation, and protection systems. Assist in developing standards, procedures, and guidelines for substation engineering activities. Collaborate with cross‑functional teams (transmission planners, business development, testing and commissioning, construction, SCADA/OTS engineering, PV engineering, BESS engineering) to integrate substations into the overall power grid. Participate in constructability reviews and inspections to mitigate hazards. Mentor junior engineers, technicians, and peers. Maintain accurate documentation and records of designs and modifications. Participate in team meetings and calls regularly, demonstrating safe work practices in energized substations. Qualifications Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering or related field; master’s degree preferred. 5+ years in substation design, construction, or maintenance, or equivalent experience. Solid understanding of power systems (transmission, distribution, generation). Proficiency in engineering software tools such as ETAP, SKM, or PSS/E. Familiarity with protection relay programming, coordination studies, grounding studies, simulation software such as SEL, CDEGS, GE Enervista. Knowledge of relevant industry standards and codes (IEEE, ANSI, NESC). Strong analytical, problem‑solving, and communication skills; ability to work effectively in a team. Detail‑oriented, capable of managing multiple projects and prioritizing tasks. Willingness to pursue licensure is a plus.
