This is a senior, hands-on technical role for someone who can independently drive complex framework upgrades (Struts, Spring Boot, Spring Framework), lead compatibility assessments across major platform migrations, and mentor other engineers through the modernization lifecycle. The ideal candidate combines deep Java expertise with strong ownership of technical decision-making, risk assessment, and cross-team coordination.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesLead the modernization of existing Java applications from Java 8 to current supported Java versions (Java 17, 21, or later LTS releases).Drive the upgrade of legacy application frameworks, including Struts, Spring Boot, Spring Framework, and related Java libraries, packages, and dependencies.Lead and support the migration of applications from Red Hat Enterprise Linux 6 to Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10, identifying and resolving application compatibility issues.Conduct in-depth reviews of existing Java applications to identify outdated, unsupported, or vulnerable dependencies, and define upgrade paths and remediation strategies.Architect and implement code refactoring needed to support framework upgrades, Java version upgrades, OS compatibility, security standards, and long-term maintainability.Resolve complex issues caused by deprecated APIs, library changes, dependency conflicts, build tool updates, and runtime behavior differences between Java versions.Own and optimize Maven or Gradle build configurations, dependency management, application packaging, and deployment scripts.Partner closely with DevOps, infrastructure, QA, and application teams to validate upgraded applications in newer Linux environments.Troubleshoot advanced application startup, configuration, logging, dependency, performance, and runtime issues introduced during modernization efforts.Ensure upgraded applications continue to meet existing functional requirements without introducing unnecessary feature changes.Create and maintain technical documentation covering upgrade approach, dependency changes, compatibility findings, known risks, and deployment instructions.Lead code reviews and technical discussions focused on modernization quality, security, compatibility, and maintainability.Guide testing, validation, and issue resolution efforts during application upgrade and deployment cycles.Mentor junior and mid-level engineers on modernization best practices, upgrade strategy, and troubleshooting techniques.Follow and help refine established change management, source control, build, release, and deployment processes.Perform other modernization, remediation, and technical support duties as needed.Required Skills and Abilities8–12 years of professional Java development experience, including deep hands-on experience with Java 8 and newer Java versions.Proven track record leading modernization of legacy Java applications and upgrading applications across major Java versions.Strong experience upgrading and maintaining applications using Struts, Spring Boot, Spring Framework, Spring MVC, and related Java enterprise frameworks.Expert-level understanding of dependency management, package upgrades, library compatibility, and resolving complex transitive dependency conflicts.Demonstrated experience identifying and remediating deprecated APIs, unsupported libraries, security vulnerabilities, and framework compatibility issues at scale.Advanced proficiency with Maven or Gradle for build automation, dependency management, packaging, and application builds.Extensive experience deploying and troubleshooting Java applications in Linux environments, preferably Red Hat Enterprise Linux.Strong command of Unix/Linux shell commands for troubleshooting, log review, scripting, configuration validation, and application support.Solid experience with application servers, servlet containers, and Java runtime configuration.Deep understanding of RESTful APIs, web applications, authentication, session management, and enterprise application integration.Strong working knowledge of relational databases such as Oracle or PostgreSQL and ORM tools such as JPA/Hibernate.Extensive experience with Git, branching strategies, pull requests, and code review workflows.Skilled in automated testing using JUnit, Mockito, and integration testing frameworks.Strong ability to troubleshoot complex, ambiguous application issues related to runtime behavior, configuration, dependencies, and environment changes.Excellent documentation skills, with the ability to clearly document upgrade steps, technical decisions, risks, and validation results.Strong analytical, problem-solving, and technical leadership skills.Excellent verbal and written communication skills with the ability to explain technical risks and recommendations to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.Self-motivated, highly organized, and capable of managing multiple modernization workstreams across multiple applications and teams.Preferred QualificationsHands-on experience migrating applications from older Red Hat Enterprise Linux versions to newer supported versions.Direct experience upgrading Java applications from Java 8 to Java 17, Java 21, or later long-term support versions.Deep expertise in Struts upgrades, Struts remediation, or replacing outdated Struts components.Extensive experience upgrading Spring Boot and Spring Framework applications across major versions.Familiarity with security scanning tools and dependency vulnerability remediation.Experience with CI/CD pipelines using Azure DevOps, GitHub Actions, Jenkins, or similar tools.Experience with Docker or containerized Java application deployment.Familiarity with cloud environments such as Microsoft Azure.Experience with observability tools such as Azure Monitor, Application Insights, Datadog, Prometheus, or Grafana.Understanding of secure application development practices, including OAuth2, OpenID Connect, and secure token management.Experience supporting legacy system modernization, technical debt reduction, platform upgrades, or infrastructure migration efforts.Healthcare IT experience or familiarity with DICOM protocols is a plus.Role FocusThis role is focused on application modernization, platform compatibility, dependency upgrades, and technical remediation at a senior level. The developer will not be primarily responsible for new feature development. The main objective is to lead the effort to update and stabilize existing applications so they can run on newer Java versions, updated frameworks, supported dependencies, and Red Hat Enterprise Linux 10.Employment Type: Full-Time
