SOESD - Braillist I for the 2026-27 School Year
Southern Oregon ESD is seeking a dedicated and skilled Braillist/Compensatory Assistant position that combines production of specialized educational materials (e.g., Braille and Large Print) along with direct support to students with visual impairments who attend school in their local communities. The Braillist/Compensatory Assistant works with the Itinerant Teacher of the Visually Impaired. This unique position combines office-based production with hands-on instructional support in classrooms. Assist the licensed teacher of the visually impaired in carrying out instructional competencies unique to vision loss. Implement Orientation and Mobility activities as prescribed by the O&M specialist. Enlarge materials for low-vision students. Type at a speed of 40 wpm with 95% accuracy. Record materials for students. Produce basic contracted braille. Complete, to the satisfaction of the braille instructor, lessons 1-19 of the Instruction Manual for Braille Transcribers. Demonstrate beginning computer skills: word processing, attaching files, e-mailing, accessing the internet, and faxing. Other duties as assigned.Items tested for competencyMinimum Prerequisites High school graduate or GED equivalent. Willingness to learn special competencies. Willingness to learn Braille codes. Personable team member.
