We're a team of nearly 1,200 hardworking people, ready to serve Seattle's public transportation needs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, no matter the weather.Position OverviewSDOT’s Transportation Operations Division's Operations team is seeking a qualified candidate for an exciting opportunity as an Assistant Traffic Operations Engineer (under the City’s classification title of Assistant Civil Engineer 1). As part of the team, the position will perform traffic safety and operations reviews and analysis to recommend data-supported safety and operations improvements. In addition, this position will develop new signal timing throughout the city that balances multi-modal operations using the City’s latest best practices and policies. This position reports to the Traffic Operations Supervisor.Job ResponsibilitiesPerforms signal timing, operational and safety analysis, and review tasks.Responds to public inquiries on various traffic safety and operational concerns.Reviews final plans, specifications, estimates and agreement. Inspects work done by city crews and contractors.Prepares traffic engineering studies on traffic flow, traffic collisions, parking, biking, walking and transit.Actively support the department’s goals for diversity and social justice, in line with the City’s Race and Social Justice Initiative.QualificationsMinimum Qualifications:Bachelor of Science in Civil Engineering or Civil Engineering Technology; or other combinations of education and/or experience which provides preparation to do professional civil engineering work.Current Washington State driver's license or evidence of equivalent mobility. Successful candidates will possess many of these additional qualifications or be able to demonstrate comparable experience and expertise:Familiarity in traffic modeling software, such as Synchro, SimTraffic and Vissim, a plus.Familiarity in signal controller software and central signal systems. Engineer-In-Training (EIT) certificate, preferredDetail oriented with strong organizational, time-management and customer service skills.Proficient in MS Word, Excel and Power Point.Effective oral and written communication and customer service; proven ability to communicate information clearly, concisely, and accurately to all staff, contractors, vendors and other departments.Effectively work in multi-cultural workplace with diverse customer base.Additional InformationWork Environment/Physical DemandsMost work is performed in a normal City work/office environment with hybrid options at this time.Field assignments entail exposure to all types of weather, traffic, hazardous/toxic substances and work in or near construction sites.May be required to lift over 50 pounds.May be required to stand, walk, or bend for extended periods of time.May be required to work nights, evenings, weekends, and/or holidays.Overnight travel may be required.Offers of employment are contingent on verification of information provided by the applicant as part of the application process, including background check.Please note this job advertisement is not designed to cover or contain a comprehensive listing of activities, duties or responsibilities that are required of the employee for this job.
