Senior Genetic Counselor - Danbury, CTThe Senior Genetic Counselor oversees genetic counseling services at multiple sites in the Network, primarily focused on either Cancer or Prenatal. The role develops consistent policies and procedures throughout the Network and monitors compliance with them. The Counselor ensures that genetic counseling services are delivered to individuals and families according to established practices, policies and procedures within the context of the Network Maternal Fetal Medicine program and/or Network Cancer program. The Counselor may also contribute to research related to genetic conditions or genetic counseling.ResponsibilitiesAssess individual or family risk for a variety of inherited conditions such as genetic disorders and birth defects, providing information to patients, families and other healthcare providers.Provide genetic counseling and testing to patients at risk for hereditary cancer, assisting them in making informed medical decisions based on personal risk assessment.Develop and implement programs as identified by specialties.Provide a comprehensive plan to assist patients and families with all aspects of risk assessment, testing, surveillance, surgical decision-making and follow-up care.Complete comprehensive family history documentation, risk assessment for cancer, education of basic genetic concepts, and detailed medical history, including creation of a family genetic pedigree.Counsel women undergoing chorionic villus sampling, amniocentesis, detailed ultrasound examination and fetal blood sampling.Participate in research related to genetics.Counsel women regarding first-trimester risk assessment and biochemical serum screening results.Coordinate and interpret genetic testing and develop a management plan based on test results.Establish and maintain a genetic database; actively participate in ongoing research projects.Conduct community and professional education programs.Provide direct supervision of genetic counseling students and trainees, serving as a role model for assertive, open and receptive communication and fostering advanced skills development.Understand legal implications of clinical procedures, discuss informed consent, including issues of privacy, confidentiality and discrimination, functioning as a patient advocate.Identify opportunities for growth and work on marketing plans to expand clinical genetic counseling accessibility and uptake at service locations; develop and administer programs to enhance referral sources and patient volume.Actively engage in implementation of new genetic counseling procedures and clinic protocols to ensure high-quality, cost-effective services and patient satisfaction.Direct and facilitate the development of educational programming updates for staff and professionals; educate individuals within the medical community through lectures, conferences and one-on-one interactions.Fulfill all compliance responsibilities related to the position.Perform other duties as assigned.RequirementsMinimum formal education of a Master's Degree and at least one year of job-related experience.Desired certifications: CT Genetics Counselor License; Board certification or eligibility from the American Board of Genetic Counseling.Experience in genetic counseling with oncology, high-risk cancer, and maternal-fetal medicine patients.Statistical and analytical skills; experience with management databases; proficiency with MS Word and Excel.Demonstrated leadership in clinical, research or administrative settings; ability to assist the coordinator of clinical genetics with caseload management and special program development.Compensation and LocationDanbury, CT | $32.64 – $65.01 per hour, commensurate with experience.J-18808-Ljbffr
