As a key stakeholder the Parent Advocate and Engagement Specialist will work collaboratively with the building administration to develop strong parental connections to the school and with the District Office to coordinate and implement mental health-related promotion, prevention, intervention and resilience activities.Job Description: Engages in activities which support and individualize the teaching-learning process development of sustainable school-based mental health systems in the Proviso Township High Schools District 209. Works to develop strong parental connections to the school and systems to support mental health and wellbeing of students and families.Essential Job Functions:Meets with principals, teachers and other school personnel to discuss strategies for improving parental engagement and school-family partnerships.Greets parents and community members who enter the building and assists them in effectively engaging with the school.Works closely with other stakeholders in carrying out the development, implementation and assessment of the Title I Educational Plan and the Project AWARE Grant.Engages in activities which promote communication and understanding between the parent, school and the community.At the request of the principal or designee, plans and holds ongoing activities that attract families and students to the school and to retain student enrollment.Develops and conducts training for parents/families and volunteers that will enable them to work more effectively with their children in order to raise achievement and close the achievement gap.Assists in developing and maintaining parent centers at the school for the dissemination of information, resources and training.Engages in activities designed to broaden self-awareness of effective strategies for working with parents such as reading literature, attending in-services and/or classes/seminars. Uses strategies in training and dissemination of information to parents/familiesSupport schools in carrying out parental activities. Attends and participates in school governance meetings, as appropriate.Works closely with universities, churches and community agencies, especially those offering mental-health-related promotion, awareness, prevention, intervention, to provide support to parents.Monitors program data and outcomes.Completes required reports.Attends meetings as requested.Actively supports the district's strategic plan.Performs other duties as assigned.Qualifications/Requirements: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Previous experience working to develop sustainable mental health supports in a school or community context or experience with grant implementation. Familiarity with school routines, programs and resources would be helpful.Knowledge, Skills, and AbilitiesKnowledge of effective parent engagement strategies and school-based mental health systems development required. Effective oral and written communication and presentation skills are also required. Skill at organizing resources and establishing priorities. Excellent teamwork skills are essential. The ability to develop effective working relationships with diverse individuals at all levels is required. Must have excellent planning and organizational skills. Must be able to manage numerous responsibilities with varying deadlines.
