Associate Landlord-Tenant Attorney
Velair Development Company is seeking an In-House Landlord–Tenant Attorney to manage and oversee all legal matters related to Landlord–Tenant law across our property management portfolio. This role provides day-to-day legal support to operations, ensuring compliance with federal, state, and local laws while mitigating legal risk and supporting operational efficiency.
The Attorney will serve as Velair’s primary internal legal resource for eviction actions, lease enforcement, fair housing matters, resident disputes, and housing court proceedings. This individual will work closely with property management and leadership to provide proactive legal guidance in a fast-paced, high-volume environment.
Essential Functions
Legal & Court Representation
Handle and oversee landlord–tenant legal matters across the Velair portfolio, including evictions, lease enforcement, unlawful detainer actions, rent escrow claims, and related proceedings.
Represent Velair in housing court, mediation sessions, and administrative hearings as required.
Prepare, review, and file pleadings, motions, affidavits, and other legal documents related to landlord–tenant matters.
Manage case workflow efficiently to support portfolio operations across multiple counties.
Advisory & Risk Management
Provide ongoing legal advice to property management and leadership regarding landlord–tenant issues, resident disputes, and operational decisions.
Advise on risk mitigation strategies related to lease language, enforcement practices, resident communications, and operational procedures.
Review and approve lease templates, notices, and internal policies to ensure compliance with applicable laws.
Provide guidance on fair housing compliance and related regulatory matters.
Training & Internal Support
Serve as a legal resource for escalated resident grievances and complex operational issues.
Collaborate with leadership on legal strategy related to portfolio operations and policy development.
Support operational teams with practical, solution-oriented legal guidance.
Secondary Duties
Perform additional legal and administrative duties as assigned by Velair leadership.
Assist with special projects related to acquisitions, dispositions, or operational initiatives as needed.
Juris Doctor (J.D.) from an accredited law school.
Active license to practice law in the State of Minnesota.
2–5 years of experience in landlord–tenant law, housing court, or related litigation.
Experience handling high-volume caseloads preferred.
Strong written and verbal communication skills.
Ability to manage competing priorities and operate independently within established guidelines.
Practical, solutions-oriented mindset with strong attention to detail.
