Project Engineer I
The Project Engineer I will be responsible for assisting senior project management in overseeing state and federally funded highway construction projects in the greater Roanoke area, particularly on Interstate 81. This position will work closely with Owners/Prime Contractors and Adams field personnel to schedule, plan, and successfully complete the milling and paving portions of large construction projects.ResponsibilitiesAssist senior project management team with establishing both long term and short-term scheduling for each job in accordance with the project phasingClearly communicate the plan and goals for each shift to all necessary parties Review and identify potential safety or constructability issues and clearly communicate them to relevant personnelCoordinate with various internal divisions to ensure that all necessary personnel and equipment for the shift are ready and availableAccurately document and record all daily productions, quantities, locations of work, and notes about miscellaneous occurrences on the jobsite. Provide reports to necessary parties Work closely with inspectors and QC staff to ensure all VDOT specifications are being metAssist in enabling crews to achieving maximize efficiency while also minimizing safety hazards to both employees and traveling public by ensuring that work areas are adequately prepared and all plans are in place prior to the crew’s mobilization to the site.Ability to overcome unforeseen obstacles when they arise in the fieldCoordinate with owner and general contractor on a regular basis to ensure that overall project schedule and goals are being metRemain informed about incurred costs versus estimated costs to ensure that the project is built within the estimated budgetWillingness to work night shift as required by project schedule and prescribed DOT work hoursQualificationsBasic understanding of reading highway construction plans requiredBasic understanding of construction survey grades requiredStrong organizational skills are required Experience managing construction crews and projects preferredExperience and understanding of asphalt milling and paving operations preferredExperience working on VDOT construction projects, specifically Design Build and Bid Build projects is preferredCivil Engineering or other construction related degree preferred (years of relevant experience in lieu of college degree will also be considered)Must possess strong interpersonal skillsMust possess a valid driver’s license with an acceptable driving record requiredPhysical RequirementsAbility to lift and carry heavy loads of up to 75 pounds or more on a day-to-day basis;The ability to exert maximum muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects. Capacity to stand, walk, bend, and kneel for extended periods, often ranging from 8 to 14 hours, without "giving out" or fatiguing. The ability to quickly make coordinated movements of one hand with its arm, or two hands to grasp, manipulate, or assemble objects.The ability to quickly move the arms and/or legs. Comfort working in extreme temperatures (heat and cold), humidity, and dusty environments.
