Clinical Director
For more than 50 years, Samaritans has provided lifesaving suicide prevention services in Massachusetts. Samaritans’ mission is to prevent suicide and offer hope and support to those affected. Established in Boston by Monica Dickens in 1974, Samaritans follows the principles of befriending, created by Samaritans in the United Kingdom. While Samaritans offices all over the world share a common suicide prevention mission and philosophy, all Samaritans offices operate independently from one another. In the last 50+ years, their volunteers have answered more than 3 million calls, chats, and texts from people who are struggling. Samaritans has trained more than 6,500 volunteers, provided suicide prevention workshops to 180,000 people, and supported 17,000 suicide loss survivors in their grief journeys. Samaritans is hiring a Clinical Director who will provide strategic, clinical, and operational leadership for all programs at Samaritans through a mission-driven, trauma-informed and ethically sound lens. This position will ensure all program activities meet the highest standards of safety, ethics, and effectiveness while supporting individuals in crisis and strengthening community mental health pathways. Reporting to the Chief Clinical Officer, the Clinical Director will oversee clinical protocols, supervise crisis response, and serve as a key voice in suicide prevention, intervention, and postvention response.Key ResponsibilitiesDrive and support the clinical vision, strategy, and standards across all programsEstablish and oversee clinical protocols, workflows, documentation, and quality assurance processesEnsure compliance with all regulatory, ethical, and best practice standards in crisis intervention and suicide preventionProvide clinical leadership, supervision, and consultation to staff, volunteers, and partnersLead and oversee organizational crisis response across varying communication platformsOffer real-time guidance in high-risk situations and oversee risk assessments, safety planning, and interventionsEnsure appropriate follow up and continuity of care for individuals in crisisDevelop and maintain strong referral networks with hospitals, outpatient providers, and community agenciesEnsure timely, trauma-informed referrals and access to ongoing support servicesBuild and strengthen community partnerships to expand access to mental health resources Contribute to public communications, including media response, and community education initiatives Represent Samaritans in community forums, coalitions, and professional networks Provide strategic clinical guidance for public-facing materials, trainings, and outreach initiativesQualifications & SkillsMaster’s degree in Social Work, Mental Health Counseling, Psychology, or related field Active clinical licensure required: LMHC, LMFT, LICSW, or equivalent 7+ years of professional experience in a social service agency5+ years of clinical experience including crisis intervention and suicide prevention workSupervisory or program leadership experience strongly preferredExperience working in nonprofit, community mental health, or crisis service environments is a plusStrong understanding of mental illness, trauma, and evidence based mental health practicesDemonstrated experience providing direct mental health support in crisis settingsAbility to lead, mentor, and support teamsStrong communication skills, including the ability to make effective and persuasive presentations to communities, volunteers, staff, industry peers, board members, and donorsProficiency in Microsoft Office Suite; Salesforce experience preferredDetail oriented and able to accomplish tasks within specified timeframesAbility to travel for occasional workshops, tranings, and industry related conferences
