Finishing/Shipping Project Engineer

SSAB offers challenging careers and comprehensive benefit program designed to keep employees and their families healthy and secure.POSITION PURPOSEThis position provides critical support to the Rolling Mill, Finishing, Shipping, Mechanical Maintenance, and Electrical Maintenance departments. This role focuses on improving equipment reliability, optimizing operational performance, and ensuring safe, efficient processing and shipment of plate and coil products. The position contributes to strategic planning, capital project execution, and continuous improvement initiatives that enhance throughput, safety, and product quality.Essential FunctionsOperational SupportAssist in reducing equipment downtime and improving equipment utilization.Support the development of departmental goals and objectives.Assist in developing and managing the department capital plan.Drive continuous improvement initiatives and ROCE projects.Enforce company practices, policies, and safety expectations.Develop and manage projects scheduled for planned outages.Develop and review Job Safety Analyses (JSA) and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP).Provide support for operations employees’ requests and problem resolution.Facilitate and participate in departmental meetings.Equipment & Process OversightMonitor, tune, and ensure compliance with specifications and standards for the following equipment and functional areas:Static Cold ShearCold Plate LevelerHeavy Plate PilerPlate InspectionShipping OperationsSafety & Training ResponsibilitiesParticipate in housekeeping tours to maintain a safe and clean work environment.Schedule and conduct one Safety Hazard Recognition tour per year; assign corrective action responsibilities for all findings.Complete SAFESTART Trainer training and assist in delivering SAFESTART training to mill employees.Track all safety deliverables and communicate monthly progress to department managers.Participate in accident/incident/near‑miss investigations.Collect and log safety observations; assign corrective action responsibilities.Collect and file Lockout/Tagout (LOTO) forms.Assist in scheduling all required departmental employee training.QualificationsRequired Competencies & ExperienceMinimum of five years of experience in a steelmaking or heavy industrial environment.Strong written and oral communication skills.Solid understanding of production planning and maintenance systems.Mid‑ to high‑level computer proficiency.Knowledge of finishing and shipping operations.Strong organizational and leadership skills.Ability to professionally interface with employees at all levels of the organization.Capable of working effectively with minimal supervision or direction.Preferred CompetenciesTraining in, or strong understanding of, Six Sigma methodologies.RequiredEDUCATION REQUIREMENTSBachelor's degree in a technical discipline OR an Associate's degree in a technical discipline with a minimum of 2 years of industry related experience.High school diploma, GED, or HSE equivalent.PreferredBachelor of Science or Master of Science degree in engineering, computer science, business, or a related scientific field.WORK ENVIRONEMENT AND PHYSICAL DEMANDSThis position operates in both office and industrial environments. The role routinely uses standard office equipment and is partially sedentary, averaging approximately three hours of sitting per day.The position frequently requires work in industrial areas with exposure to heat, cold, noise, and environmental hazards.
