DIRECTOR OF SCHOOL NUTRITIONSummaryProvide high quality, nutritious meals for students, staff and visitors. The food will be prepared according to state and federal guidelines and with proper sanitation and safe food handling techniques.DUTIESProvides leadership to the School Nutrition Department on day-to-day operations. Monitors daily operations to assure that work is performed efficiently and in accordance with appropriate regulations, policies, procedures, and guidelines.Visit all lunchrooms on a regular basis to ensure high standards of health and safety and to ascertain improvements where needed.Develops and administers a school nutrition program to meet all the requirements of state laws and regulations regarding school nutrition.Plan disposition of government commodities as part of food service program and keeps accurate and timely records of such. Collects invoices from each school upon receipt of commodities.Assure that food items are prepared, served and stored properly.Monitor food preparation methods, portion sizes, garnishing, and presentation of food in order to ensure that food is prepared and presented in an acceptable and safe manner.Prepare modified menus for students with food allergies, diabetes, or other diet restrictions, maintain required documentation, and communicate with students and parents as needed. Instructs cooks on correct implementation of modified menus.Creation of district menu that is in compliance with Federal guidelines.Assure compliance with health and sanitation requirements.Record and file invoices.Inventory food and supplies.Take orders for supplies from each head cook and orders accordingly and within budget.Purchase all food, supplies, and equipment for the cafeterias and kitchens. Submit orders to appropriate vendors as needed.Assist in stocking all deliveries and dating them for health and safety.Assist in the daily clean-up of kitchen and service areas.Assume responsibility for storage and disposal of unused foods.Complete assigned reports including production reports, end of month inventories, student daily count sheet, etc.Maintain an organized and efficient record keeping system and documents necessary information to comply with board policy and state/federal mandates.Plan staff dinners when applicable, as well as other assigned events by administration.Participate in appropriate school and district training programs.Maintains safety standards and develops a program of preventive safety.Investigates and resolves daily operational problems while coordinating with the Superintendent or their designee on complex problems.Arrange for equipment maintenance and repairs and coordinate a variety of services such as waste removal and pest control.Investigate and resolve complaints regarding food quality, service, or accommodations.Recruits, trains, supervises, and evaluates all school nutrition personnel, making recommendations to the superintendent on their employment.Establish standards for personnel performance and conduct or supervise yearly performance evaluations of food service employees.Find substitutes for cafeteria workers when they are required.Manages morning, lunch and recess part-time supervisors.The employee, in consultation with the Superintendent and CSBO, will prepare and administer the school nutrition budget.Develops recommendations for future equipment and personnel needs.Work cheerfully and courteously with staff, students and visitors.Other duties or responsibilities as may be reasonably and lawfully assigned in accordance with the negotiated agreement, School Code of Illinois, Board policy, or the Superintendent. QualificationsMust possess High School Diploma and/or advanced degrees.At least 3 years of relevant food service experience preferred.Possess the Certified Food Protection Manager License (pass the ANAB-accredited exam).Possess a State of Illinois Food Handler Training License.School Nutrition Association Certificate in School Nutrition is not required but recommended.Must complete the required annual continuing education/training.Preferred experience and good general knowledge of school nutrition operations including quantity food preparation, equipment, recipes, etc.Demonstrates skills and knowledge in supervising, leading, motivating, and evaluating staff.Ability to understand and communicate basic oral and written instructions.Basic understanding and experience with personal computer and programs.Enforce school regulations and policies in a professional manner.Ability to maintain good working relationships with fellow employees and pupils.Ability to stand for long periods of time.Ability to lift and carry up to 50 lbs.Ability to push/pull up to 50 lbs.Ability to communicate with students, parents and staff in a respectful/courteous manner. SCHEDULING This is a nine month position with specific hours and schedules determined upon employment or reemployment.
