Job DescriptionHand and Upper Extremity Orthopedic Surgeon (MD/DO)Position SummaryThe Hand and Upper Extremity Orthopedic Surgeon provides comprehensive surgical and non-surgical care for patients with conditions affecting the hand, wrist, elbow, and shoulder. This role includes evaluation, diagnosis, operative management, and rehabilitation planning for traumatic, degenerative, congenital, and overuse conditions, delivered through evidence-based, patient-centered orthopedic care.Essential Duties and ResponsibilitiesEvaluate and manage conditions of the hand, wrist, forearm, elbow, and shoulder, including trauma, arthritis, nerve compression, tendon disorders, and congenital abnormalitiesPerform surgical procedures consistent with fellowship training and privileges, including hand and upper extremity reconstruction, fracture fixation, nerve and tendon repair, and elective proceduresProvide non-operative management such as injections, splinting, casting, therapy referrals, and rehabilitation planningManage perioperative and postoperative care, including complication management and functional recoveryParticipate in orthopedic trauma and emergency call coverage as requiredInterpret diagnostic studies including X-rays, CT scans, MRI, and electrodiagnostic testingCollaborate with physical and occupational therapy, primary care, rheumatology, neurology, plastic surgery, and rehabilitation servicesEducate patients and families regarding diagnoses, treatment options, surgical risks, and expected outcomesMaintain accurate and timely clinical documentationParticipate in quality improvement, patient safety, and outcomes initiativesSupervise and educate residents, fellows, advanced practice providers, or clinical staff as applicableComply with all regulatory, accreditation, and professional standardsQualificationsDoctor of Medicine (MD) or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine (DO) from an accredited medical schoolCompletion of an accredited orthopedic surgery residency programCompletion of an accredited hand and upper extremity or hand surgery fellowshipBoard-eligible or board-certified in Orthopedic SurgeryEligibility for subspecialty certification in Hand Surgery preferredAbility to obtain and maintain unrestricted state medical licensureDEA registration or eligibilitySkills and CompetenciesAdvanced expertise in hand and upper extremity surgical techniquesStrong clinical judgment and operative decision-making skillsAbility to manage complex musculoskeletal and neurovascular conditionsExcellent communication and patient counseling abilitiesCommitment to evidence-based practice, quality improvement, and patient safetyWork EnvironmentHospital operating rooms, outpatient orthopedic clinics, ambulatory surgery centers, and inpatient unitsCall coverage including nights, weekends, and holidays as requiredPhysical RequirementsAbility to stand for extended periods during surgical proceduresManual dexterity and physical stamina for fine motor surgical workVisual and auditory acuity sufficient for operative and clinical environments
