Intern, R&D Undergraduate Year Round - Photonic & Phononic Microsystems, Hybrid
What Your Job Will Be Like
We are seeking an Intern Year Round – R&D Undergrad to support integrated photonic research in the Photonics and Phononics Microsystem department (Org. 5265) for various national security applications including communications, sensing, and signal processing.
On any given day, you may be called on to:
Assemble test fixtures and demonstration prototypes
Program hardware control and interface systems
Perform experiments with novel systems (while working on‑site)
Support various laboratory needs and project needs
Report results in reports, presentations, or technical journals
The selected applicant can work a combination of onsite and offsite work. The selected applicant must live within a reasonable distance for commuting to the assigned work location when necessary.
Salary Range
Our interns earn competitive pay rates. Your pay rate will be determined during the hire process and included in your offer package.
Qualifications We Require
Currently attending and enrolled full time in an accredited undergraduate program
Pursuing a science, engineering, or math major
Minimum cumulative GPA of 3.0/4.0
Ability to work up to 25 hours per week during the academic year, and up to 40 hours per week during the summer
U.S. citizens, legal permanent residents, asylees or refugees in the U.S.
Qualifications We Desire
Currently enrolled in undergraduate‑level coursework in electrical engineering, physics or a related engineering/science field
Programming experience (ex. Matlab or Python)
Experience with hand and power tools
Hands‑on experience in fabrication or manufacturing, such as electromechanical systems
Experience operating in a research laboratory environment with basic knowledge of laboratory safety and test equipment operation
Excellent organizational skills with attention to details
Strong writing and verbal communication skills (email, phone call, PowerPoint, reports)
Ability to work in a team/group project environment and to solve challenging problems (independently and collaboratively)
Ability to learn new skills and techniques
