This position requires an excellent understanding of both contemporary art and scientific research practices, technical proficiency in a range of fabrication methods and materials. The technician will work closely with faculty artists, art students, and faculty scientists to help bring complex creative visions to life and support the research of our R1 institution. The Fabrication Technician will report to and work with the Harpur Fabrication Lab supervisor.The successful candidate will turn complex conceptual ideation and design into physical art pieces and assist the Harpur Fabrication Lab supervisor with the science department work flow.Responsibilities will include, but not be limited to, the following:Design and fabrication consultation for the School of the Arts faculty and students.Contribute to the long-term growth of the Arts departments through technical support, collaboration, and innovation.Provide technical support and functional knowledge in Digital and Analog fabrication Practices including but not limited to:3-D printing laser cutting, CNC routing, 3-D modeling, mold making and casting, printmaking, carpentry, metal fabrication, machining, plastic fabrication, model-making and fiber workSupport faculty's creative research with material expertise, fabrication techniques and technical solutions.Assist Harpur Fabrication Lab supervisor with scientific workflow.Work independently and collaboratively in a dynamic academic environmentMaintain fabrication equipment and support shop safety protocols in shared studio space.RequirementsBachelor's Degree (or higher)At least 3 years of fabrication experience Experience in art fabrication, studio production, or related technical work supporting creative projectsExperience with a mix of tools and equipment used in metal and wood fabrication, mold-making and casting, and digital fabrication technologiesProblem-solving, organizational, and communication skillsPreferredBachelor's degree (or higher) in the Arts or Industrial DesignAdministrative or project management experienceExperience troubleshooting and repairing equipment, machinery and instrumentsUnderstanding of fabrication and build materialsVisa sponsorship is not available for this position.
