The selected candidate will report to the associate head of school for finance & operations and be responsible for leadership and operational oversight over all safety and security functions at the school’s campus in Woodley Park and athletic fields in Chevy Chase. The ideal candidate will take a collaborative approach and foster a culture of safety, security, trust, and preparedness among all constituents, including faculty, students, families, contractors, and campus visitors.Safety And Security Operations FunctionsIn cooperation with other administrators, establish and develop proper policies, procedures and guidelines to provide safety and security of life and property on campusBadgingAccess control (campus gates and buildings)Visitor management (parents, contractors, vendors, etc.)Camera accessTraining and table-top exercisesIncident response, emergency operations plans, reunification and continuity plansSupervise all security and traffic personnel, including hiring, training, managing, assessing, and scheduling (post orders) for daily operations, evening schedules, and special eventsConduct regular physical security audits (fencing, lighting, entry points, and signage)Regularly review campus needs for emergency response and life-safety equipment (e.g., AEDs, fire extinguishers, stop the bleed kits)Schedule and manage safety drills for fire, lockdown, shelter, weather emergencies, and evacuation; provide appropriate documentationProvide incident command and coordinate emergency response for events such as fires, severe weather, a missing student, or other emergencies; provide appropriate documentationLead investigations involving accidents, thefts, property loss, or unlawful activityCoordinate pick-up/drop-off, traffic, and parking plans for daily operations and special eventsBuild strong, transparent relationships with families regarding safety protocols, behavior expectations, and culture initiativesCreate and maintain relationships with local first respondersCreate and chair the school’s Emergency Preparedness CommitteeCo-chair or actively participate in a multidisciplinary threat assessment teamIn partnership with the Director of Communications, review protocols and tools for timely, accurate communication to faculty, families, and students during critical incidentsOversee the budget development and execution for all areas of securityParticipate in meetings with the Buildings & Grounds Committee and the full Board as neededRequired Expertise And ExperienceDegree in criminal justice, emergency management, public safety, or equivalent field/experience10+ years of progressively responsible experience in campus safety, law enforcement, military, or emergency management with 3+ years in a leadership roleExperience with crisis management, emergency communications, and safety drill programsFirst aid/CPR certificationExcellent oral and written communication skillsFamiliarity with cloud-based security platforms (Verkada) and life-safety systemsExperience managing vendor contractsPhysical And Mental RequirementsAbility to effectively read, write, and otherwise communicate in EnglishCapable of bending, stretching, reaching, lifting, and/or standing for extended periods and the ability to carry, lift, or drag heavy items (up to 50 pounds)Able to quickly traverse multi-acre campuses in various weather conditionsSensory requirements include close and distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to hear voices, alarms, bells, and horns to identify and respond to potential threats and emergency system notificationsA successful candidate will have the following qualifications and skills:Creative problem-solverConsistent attention to detailCalm and decisive analysis and leadership under stressAbility to motivate and manage peopleStrong organizational and time-management skillsProfessional, cooperative, and courteous mannerCommitment to confidentiality and the school’s missionActive driver’s licenseExperience in independent or K–12 schools, including age-appropriate safety trainingThe school offers a competitive salary and benefits package. The salary range is $140,000–$160,000.
