Accounting Manager
POSITION SUMMARY Our client is seeking a detail-oriented Accounting & Administration Manager to support both the firm and its portfolio investments. This is a split role between internal operations and hands-on accounting and administrative support across multiple portfolio companies.The role offers broad exposure to private equity and small business operations, working closely with investment and leadership teams to support day-to-day financial activities, organization, and process improvement.This is a hands-on, high-impact position ideal for someone who enjoys variety and working across multiple entities. The role is primarily office-based with light travel (~10 days per year) to support portfolio company operations.RESPONSIBILITIESLead the month-end close process, including reconciliations, journal entries, variance analysis, and supporting schedules to ensure accuracy, completeness, and timeliness.Process accounts payable, accounts receivable, and customer invoicing in a timely manner.Develop, document, and oversee standardized accounting policies and procedures to ensure proper records and strong internal controls.Manage and improve the budgeting and forecasting process, including variance analysis and identification of key drivers.Prepare monthly financial reporting packages and present results to management and ownership.Develop and monitor cash flow management tools to ensure adequate liquidity and support ongoing operations.Identify and track key performance indicators (KPIs) and cost-saving initiatives to support effective decision-making.Support deal and portfolio administration, including tracking key dates, deliverables, and follow-ups.Coordinate with external accountants on tax filings, audits, and review processes.Build and maintain relationships with banking partners, auditors, and other professional advisors.Handle general office and operational tasks to ensure smooth daily operations.IDEAL CANDIDATE PROFILEThe ideal candidate is proactive, organized, and comfortable handling multiple tasks in a fast-paced, professional environment.Initial focus on transitioning accounting responsibilities across two entities.Managing varying levels of complexity between businesses.Potential for scope expansion over time; requires strong prioritization.OPPORTUNITY, CULTURE & FITTrue 40-hour work week with no expectation of extended hours.Flexible schedule and work arrangement (min 4 days per week in office).Hands-on role in a small business environment with direct impact on operations.Opportunity to expand responsibilities across additional entities over time.Stable environment with strong tenure and long-term career potential.Based in Birmingham with dedicated office space; minimal travel (quarterly Chicago visits).EDUCATION & TECHNICAL SKILLSBachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, or related disciplineAt least 3 years of accounting experience, regional accounting firm or larger is preferredStrong attention to detail and accuracyClear written and verbal communication skillsProficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word, Outlook); advanced skills in Excel are preferredProficiency with QuickBooks preferredComfort handling confidential and sensitive informationSelf-starter who can work independentlyCPA is a plusExperience with percentage-of-completion accounting is a plus
