FIREFIGHTER (PART-TIME) INTERNAL
DescriptionThe purpose of the class is to perform general firefighting work, to respond to calls for emergency service and to perform related work as required. This part-time position consists of technical work in the prevention, control, and suppression of structural and non-structural fires; responds to fire and rescue calls; suppresses fires; renders emergency medical assistance while on-scene; and operates fire rescue equipment. This class reports to the Fire Captain of their station working partial or full shifts ranging from 9 to 24hrs in the Dorchester County Fire Department. This class works within a general outline of work to be performed and develops work methods and sequences under general supervision.DutiesESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSCoordinates and participates in the work of an assigned fire station.Responds to fire/emergency medical and non-emergency calls; extracts persons from vehicles as needed.Performs firefighting and fire suppression activities including laying hose, performing fire combat, containing and extinguishing fires; and creating openings in buildings for ventilation and entrance.Protects property from smoke and water damage using positive pressure ventilation, salvage covers, smoke ejectors and deodorants.Administers emergency aid activities including first aid and artificial respiration to injured persons and those overcome by fire and smoke.Participates in drills, demonstrations and courses in hydraulics and firefighting techniques.Adheres to station policies and procedures; ensures compliance with all federal and state regulations. Must attend required training and meetings as deemed appropriate.Assists with pre-fire planning, prevention, and apparatus checks.Performs duties in a manner consistent with safe practices and policies.Operates a fire engine and motor vehicle; utilizes all fire suppression equipment, hand and power tools, groundskeeping and housekeeping equipment, first aid supplies and various office machines.Interacts and communicates with various groups and individual such as the Fire Chief, other fire departments, other emergency response agencies, law enforcement agencies, co-workers, volunteers and the public.May conduct station tours.Maintains cleanliness of station; secures station at night.Keeps physically fit.Performs other related job duties as assigned.All County employees are considered public servants for the citizens of Dorchester County. When requested before, during, or after an emergency event, County employees are expected to work and serve the public in coping with the emergency.QualificationsQUALIFICATIONSEducation and Experience:High school diploma or GED.Prefer at least one (1) year of related work experience.Required Special Qualifications:Must possess a valid South Carolina driver's license.International Fire Service Accreditation Congress (IFSAC) or Pro Board Firefighter IHazmat AwarenessNational Incident Management System (NIMS-ICS) 100, 200, 700, 800First Aid/CPR/AEDMust obtain with in one (1) year of hire:Hazardous Materials OperationsIFSAC Firefighter IISouth Carolina Fire Academy (SCFA) Rapid Intervention Team or equivalentSCFA Rescuing the Rescuer or equivalentEmergency Medical ResponderSCFA Emergency Vehicle Driver TrainingAdditional RequirementsWORK ENVIRONMENTWork is performed dealing with crisis situations that require making major decisions involving people, resources, and property.Dorchester County has the right to revise this job description at any time. Employees are scheduled to work from 9 to 24hr shifts based on departmental need and employee availability. Part-time Firefighters are required to sign up for and work at least 2 shifts per month to maintain employment. Availability to work during the day, weekends, holidays, during emergencies, or as requested is desired. This is a safety sensitive position and employees holding this position have the responsibility for their own safety and the safety of others. This position is subject to random drug testing.E.O.E.
