The environment supports professional growth, accountability, and continuous improvement.Role Description The Principal Java Backend Software Engineer is a contract, on-site role based in Cincinnati, OH. This role is responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining robust backend services and APIs that support pharmaceutical business applications and data workflows. Day-to-day tasks include implementing scalable Java-based microservices, optimizing performance, ensuring security and reliability, and integrating backend systems with internal and third-party tools. The engineer will collaborate with product owners, architects, QA, and operations teams to translate requirements into technical solutions, perform code reviews, and guide best practices. Additional responsibilities include troubleshooting production issues, improving CI/CD pipelines, and mentoring other engineers on backend engineering standards.Qualifications Strong proficiency in Java backend development, including experience with modern frameworks such as Spring or Spring Boot.Experience designing and implementing RESTful APIs and microservices architectures.Knowledge of relational and/or NoSQL databases, including schema design, query optimization, and data integrity.Familiarity with version control (e.g., Git), build tools (e.g., Maven or Gradle), and CI/CD pipelines.Understanding of security, authentication/authorization, and compliance considerations for backend systems.Experience with cloud platforms (e.g., AWS, Azure, or GCP) and containerization (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes) is beneficial.Ability to troubleshoot complex technical issues, optimize performance, and improve system reliability.Demonstrated leadership in guiding engineering teams, conducting code reviews, and setting technical standards.Strong communication and collaboration skills, with the ability to work effectively with cross-functional stakeholders.Bachelor’s or master’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.Experience in pharmaceuticals, healthcare, or other regulated industries is a plus.
