Retail Pharmacy Technician
DescriptionThe Pharmacy Technician ensures that the pharmacy operates safely and efficiently. Duties include: maintainingpatient records, preparing and processing prescriptions, answering telephone calls, communicating with patients,payors, and healthcare providers, inventory management, shipping, and patient services. The Pharmacy Technicianmust be accurate and meticulous to avoid possible errors and ensure safety. They must be able to work understressful conditions and communicate clearly and accurately.Primary Responsibilities Are Collect, review, and interpret external data sets that support sales opportunities. Providing friendly service in person, over the phone and through written communication. Answering the telephone in a professional and timely manner. Initiating the patient intake process which includes gathering and entering detailed information aboutthe patient and the patient’s prescription into the pharmacy’s computerized system (SRS). Navigating insurance plans and accurately billing the appropriate insurance (includes coordination ofbenefits for patients with more than one payer, understanding overrides, codes, and manual billing). Staying informed on current availability of, and assisting patients with copayment assistance methods,from copayment cards or programs to foundation or grant support. Maintaining and updating records of the patient’s health, allergies, demographic, and insuranceinformation in the computerized pharmacy system. Working under the supervision of a registered pharmacist while staying current with local, state, andfederal laws. Referring any clinical questions regarding prescriptions, drug information, or health matters to apharmacist. Processing of prescriptions for review by a pharmacist.Additional Responsibilities Include Establishing and maintaining relationships with third parties such as vendors and payers. Assisting in the verification of prescription authenticity. Remaining knowledgeable about new and discontinued medications. Admixing medications under supervision. Collaborating with offices to resolve patient specific issues. Supporting non-traditional pharmacy operations (e.g., special projects, testing services, front deskclerical functions, internal sales, etc.).Competencies Gains insight into the patient’s needs, identifies opportunities that will benefit the patient, effectively buildsand maintains strong patient relationships. Senior, experienced pharmacy technicians may be askedto supervise newly hired technicians or pharmacy students.Minimum QualificationsA minimum of two (2) years of experience working as a pharmacy technician is preferred and licensure as aPharmacy Technician by the state of Michigan is required. Pharmacy Technicians need to be detailed-oriented andhave good verbal and written communication skills as well as customer service skills. Good computer skills andinsurance billing skills are required. The technician should be sociable, reliable, and able to work in a structuredenvironment. The Pharmacy Technician must be able to work efficiently and accurately, following detailedinstructions.Work Environment The Pharmacy Technician thrives in a fast-paced work environment. Sitting for prolonged periods of time at a deskand perform work on a computer in an office environment. Light to moderate lifting may be required at times.
