Autonomous Systems Engineer
Overview
In this role you will advance autonomous and AI-enabled systems across defense, healthcare, and public-safety domains. You’ll work within the Autonomous and Intelligent Systems Department to evaluate, improve, and responsibly deploy autonomy solutions, collaborating with engineers, strategists, and sponsors. You’ll tackle real-world perception, planning, and teamwork challenges, shaping high-impact applications while considering assurance and societal implications. This is a mission-driven, cross-functional role at a renowned R&D center.

ResponsibilitiesStay updated on advances in autonomy and roboticsEvaluate and improve AI/autonomy system performanceProvide thought leadership on autonomy/AI adoption in robotics hardware and cloud environmentsAssess autonomy/AI solutions and guide sponsors per their requirementsExplore robotics topics: computer vision, deep learning, ML, planning, human-machine teaming, multi-robot systemsDevelop capabilities in growth areas (e.g., maritime autonomy, healthcare robotics, space robotics)Support strategic execution for high-consequence autonomous applications, including assurance, testing & evaluation, and societal implications
Key requirementsBachelor or advanced degree with relevant autonomy/AI experience or equivalentHands-on experience in computer vision, deep learning, machine learning, or related areasAbility to articulate autonomy challenges (perception, reasoning, behaviors, collaboration) and real-world constraintsFamiliarity with ROS 2 and DockerAbility to learn new technologies independentlyExcellent written and verbal communication to explain complex concepts to varied audiencesExperience executing autonomy-focused research initiativesAbility and willingness to obtain a DoD Secret clearance within 12 months; U.S. citizen for security clearance eligibilityMinimum 50% hybrid on-site workExcellent written and verbal communicationIndependent learning mindsetClear articulation of complex concepts to non-expertsComputer visionDeep learningMachine learning
