Staff Accountant — Payroll Tax & State ComplianceFull-Time | Accounting & Finance | MultistateAbout the RoleMarvell HR is a Professional Employer Organization (PEO) delivering full-service HR, payroll, and compliance solutions across multiple states. We are seeking a motivated Staff Accountant looking to grow their career in payroll tax compliance within a fast-paced PEO environment. You'll work closely with our team to support multistate tax filings, state regulatory compliance, and general ledger functions — with mentorship and room to advance.Core ResponsibilitiesMultistate Payroll TaxAssist in preparing and filing multistate payroll tax returns (quarterly and annual) across all active jurisdictionsReconcile payroll tax liabilities and support timely remittance to federal, state, and local agenciesHelp track and respond to tax notices and correspondence from state agenciesMonitor payroll tax deadlines and maintain a filing calendar across multiple statesCoordinate with payroll systems to verify accurate tax withholdings and reportingPEO & State Regulatory ComplianceSupport compliance with PEO-specific regulations across all states of operationHelp maintain records of state registrations, SUI accounts, and employer accountsAssist in tracking state reporting requirements and deadlines for the PEO and its clientsWork with legal counsel and senior team members to implement regulatory changes as neededHelp prepare documentation for state audits and regulatory inquiriesGeneral Ledger & Financial OperationsSupport month-end close including journal entries and account reconciliationsReconcile payroll-related balance sheet accounts such as accrued wages, tax liabilities, and benefit withholdingsMaintain organized and audit-ready documentation for all payroll tax and GL activityAssist with internal reporting and audit support as neededSystems & CollaborationWork with payroll and HR platforms to ensure accurate tax data, reporting, and filing supportCollaborate with HR, operations, and client service teams to resolve payroll-related questionsSupport process improvement initiatives to strengthen compliance workflowsQualificationsRequired1–3 years of accounting or payroll tax experienceBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field Basic understanding of payroll tax concepts (federal, state, local)Experience with GL reconciliations or month-end close supportProficiency in Excel / Google SheetsStrong attention to detail and ability to manage deadlinesPreferredExposure to multistate payroll tax or employer registrationsExperience with payroll platforms (Paylocity, Paychex, Prism, or similar)Familiarity with a PEO, staffing, or HR services environmentWorking knowledge of SUI accounts or state agency correspondenceCPA pursuit or interest in payroll certifications (CPP/FPC) a plus — not required
