Database Administrator (Client Databases, CIMS, and Data Migration)
The Database Administrator is one of two anchor positions on FedScale’s cloud team supporting a federal agency client, and FedScale is hiring two people into this role given its scope across three client database platforms, the Chemical Inventory Management System (CIMS), and data migration. Database vulnerability remediation, STIG hardening, CIMS database administration, and data migration draw on the same database-specific skillset, distinct from general cloud engineering or pipeline work. The role runs a closed remediation cycle so findings stay closed.
Key Responsibilities
* Run the closed remediation cycle across client SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MySQL platforms: scan intake, triage by severity and exploitability, change-controlled remediation, verification rescan, and evidence at each step.
* Meet committed remediation windows: critical findings within 15 calendar days, high within 30, and medium within 60, measured from publication.
* Manage patches, updates, baselines, and STIG and client hardening as configuration, compared against baseline each cycle; track exceptions with a compensating control, owner, and expiration date.
* Install and maintain database instances, tune performance, validate backups by testing restores, and support continuity of operations.
* Administer the CIMS database, managing availability, replication, indexing, and performance against measured query behavior.
* Perform data migration using version-controlled schema migration scripts with tested rollback, and rotate credentials on a schedule that does not interrupt service.
* Maintain remediation logs, scan results, and exception tracking in audit-ready form, and contribute to the monthly Vulnerability and Patch Report.
* Cross-cover the CIMS application tier with the CIMS Application and Mobile Engineer, share migration ownership with the DevSecOps Engineer, and share the compliance evidence chain with the Lead Cloud Architect and Platform Engineer.
* Develop and maintain the database runbooks and operating procedures that other Database Administrators follow, so any DBA supporting the environment can work inside the same remediation cycle without ramp-up time.
Required Qualifications
* Bachelor’s degree required (experience cannot be substituted for the degree). Computer Science, Information Systems, or a related field preferred.
* 8+ years of database administration experience across at least two of Microsoft SQL Server, PostgreSQL, and MySQL, including instance installation and maintenance, data migration, and backup and recovery.
* Experience remediating database vulnerabilities and applying DISA STIGs or equivalent hardening baselines.
* Experience with high availability or replication, indexing, and performance tuning.
* Experience administering databases in Azure (Azure SQL, Azure Database for PostgreSQL/MySQL, or IaaS-hosted).
Preferred Qualifications
* Microsoft Certified: Azure Database Administrator Associate (DP-300).
* Experience supporting federal audits or authorization packages.
* Experience with schema migration tooling (for example, Flyway or Liquibase) and scripting in PowerShell, Bash, or Python.
Suitability and Onboarding Requirements
* Must successfully complete FedScale pre-hire vetting (identity, work authorization, credentials, and employment history verification).
* Must be able to complete client identity proofing and the required background investigation, and obtain and maintain a federal PIV credential.
* Must complete client privacy, security awareness, and rules of behavior training before starting work.
Work Environment
* Fully remote position. All work is performed on Government-furnished equipment within the Government-specified availability window.
* FedScale staff do not make policy or budget decisions, direct federal employees, or take procurement actions.
* Work is performed under processes compliant with CMMI Maturity Level 3 (Development and Services) and ISO 9001:2015, ISO 20000-1:2018, and ISO 27001:2022.
