The EHS Specialist coordinates the EHS activities for a Manufacturing Facility located in the Duncan, SC area. This position will ensure that compliance is maintained with AFL and regulatory requirements. The incumbent evaluates and recommends solutions to EHS related problems.ResponsibilitiesMaintains safety processes and proceduresConducts investigations into associates' hazard reporting, suggestions and complaintsDevelop procedures and training for compliance with relevant OSHA Standards and company EHS policiesSupports investigations, recordkeeping, case management and documentation for all EHS incidentsEnsures all incidents are recorded and reported according to regulatory and AFL requirementsEnsures EHS training is conducted for all affected personnel with a focus on strengthening new employee onboardingDeploys AFL safety and environmental initiativesTracks and monitors key safety and environmental metricsWorks with plant operations teams to evaluate, review, and recommend safe work practice documents.Supports EHS pillar committee and subcommittees and auditingEngages site leadership and production associates to ensure effective implementation of key EHS programsImprove organizational culture by engaging all associates in committees to drive risk reduction using manufacturing excellence toolsLeverages and analyzes EHS data to identify opportunities for improvement and establish sustainable corrective action plansNetworks across the EHS organization to identify, share and implement best practicesManages compliance with applicable environmental programs and permits (i.e. industrial wastewater, stormwater, air emissions, hazardous waste, etc.)Assists with the execution of ISO 14001 requirements to maintain certification and drive continuous improvementAssists with the execution of risk register for site through proactive identification of high-risk activities, completion of HRA assessments and implementation of corrective action plansQualifications4-year degree in an EHS-related field and 4-6 years of relevant work experience preferred; will consider a 2 year or other technical degree with at least 4 years of practical EHS work experienceIncident management, root cause analysis, and investigation skills; ensures appropriate corrective actions are established, tracked and completed in a timely mannerKnowledgeable in Occupational Safety & Health Administration (OSHA), Environmental Protection Agency (EPA), South Carolina Department of Environmental Services (SCDES), ISO 14001 and Department of Transportation (DOT) standardsRequires general personal computer skills as well as the ability to use Microsoft Operating System and specialized EHS systemsPossess the ability to conduct training for groups of employees in a classroom setting with knowledge of adult learner teaching techniquesAdditional preferred qualifications:Experience in a manufacturing environment (co-op/internship is acceptable)Knowledge of industry best practices relating to EHS process improvementsAbility to interface with multiple levels of the organization and communicate effectively to promote buy-in and reduce or eliminate negative associations with EHS initiatives.Personal QualitiesProblem Solving – Excellent ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions, and provide suggestions for improvements or corrective actionsInterpersonal skills – Communicates and works well with all levels of the organization; develops relationships with stakeholders to ensure their involvement and commitmentCollaboration – Ability to promote teamwork with associates across the organization including leading cross-functional teams of associates through committees and projectsInitiative – Keeps abreast of changing regulations and procedures; develops new and innovative methods for implementing EHS processesAutonomous – Able to set priorities while working under limited supervisionAccommodating – Treats all associates as customers; shows a high degree of empathy for employee concerns and complaintsWorking Conditions
