Controller - Construction Accounting
Job Summary
The Controller is responsible for leading and managing the company's accounting operations and ensuring the delivery of accurate, timely, and compliant financial reports. This role oversees general ledger, accounts payable, accounts receivable, billing functions, tax compliance, revenue recognition, budgeting, inventory accounting, cost accounting, various special analyses, and while serving as a key partner to operations in a project-based construction environment.
As part of an employee-owned (ESOP) organization, the Controller contributes to financial transparency, operational excellence, and long-term value creation.
Job Duties
Lead the monthly, quarterly, and annual close processes, ensuring accuracy and timeliness preparing necessary financial statements
Manage and develop the accounting team
Oversee job cost accounting, including WIP reporting and percentage-of-completion revenue recognition
Partner with operations to monitor project performance, profitability, and cost variances
Oversee accounts payable, receivable, and billing functions to ensure effective and controlled processes
Maintain and enhance internal controls and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements as well as ensuring the company complies with all additional legal and regulatory requirements.
Coordinate and assist with external audits and financial reporting for lenders, bonding companies, and ESOP- related requirements.
Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning processes
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in accounting or finance; CPA preferred
5-10+ years of progressive accounting experience, preferably within construction or a project-based industry
Strong financial and accounting background
Demonstrated leadership experience with the ability to develop high-performing teams
Proficiency in accounting systems and advanced Excel capabilities
Strong analytical, organizational, and communication skills
Analytical ability to develop and implement improvements or recommendations
Able to work well with senior executives and team, as well as mentor/lead other team members
