About GJAGeorge Jackson Academy (GJA) is the only school of its kind in New York City: an independent, nonsectarian middle school for academically capable boys from low-income and low-wealth families. The school was created to engage boys from 6th to 8th grade, a time when young men are particularly vulnerable to disengaging from school. Currently, GJA serves a diverse community of about 100 boys from all backgrounds and traditions and helps them succeed academically, socially, and emotionally. Responsibilities (Basic duties of the job include, but are not limited to:)Plan and teach a challenging course of study in a developmentally-appropriate manner, with an emphasis on differentiating instruction and effectively using assessments Serve as an Advisor to a small group of students and document attendance, grades and maintain other pertinent records according to school policiesHave both a depth and breadth of knowledge regarding middle school humanities curriculum—including teaching reading, writing and researchProvide academic support for students outside of class time as neededExemplify understanding and application of the school’s missionParticipate in collaboration regularly as a part of a teamMaintaining consistent relationships with families, including phone calls, emails and conferencesQualificationsRelevant Bachelor’s degree required, Master's degree preferred1-2 years of prior middle school teaching experience An understanding and commitment to cultural competency and how to support a diverse student populationEnthusiasm for middle school education, adaptability, and a healthy sense of humorCompensation & BenefitsSalary range of $60,000 - $65,000 with a full benefits package including medical, dental, vision, flex-spending, and commuter benefit accountsHow to ApplyInterested candidates should apply by emailing a resume and cover letter to: George Jackson Academy is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, age, disability, marital status, citizenship, national origin, genetic information, or any other characteristic protected by law.
