DEPARTMENT: ManufacturingTITLE: Tool MakerREPORTS TO: Tooling SpecialistJOB PURPOSE: Develops and implements optimal, cost-effective manufacturing processes and methods in accordance with product specifications and quality standards. Recommends and implements improvements to production processes, methods and controls (including environmental).AUTHORITY: All employees have the authority to stop operations/production for the following three reasons: 1) a quality defect, 2) an unsafe act, or 3) a health hazard.POSITION SUMMARYThis position is responsible for building or repairing all types, sizes and shapes of tools, dies, fixtures and jigs. Assemble and tryout complex tools and dies on manufacturing equipment as required for production.RESPONSIBILITIESWears all required safety equipment and ensures area and environment is safePerform preventative maintenance as requiredClean and organize area, keep area free of clutter and safety hazards - 6SReads and interprets blueprints or works from verbal or written instructions or from the part to be copied or fittedPlans the setup and operation of all types of machine shop tools, considering types of material, tolerances, types of cutting tools, coolants, lubricants and machine tool feeds and speedsHeat-treats and welds parts as requiredDetermines specifications for inspection of work, using precision measuring and gaging tools, performing required inspection before, during and after machiningPerforms hand operations involved in producing jigs, fixtures, tools and dies. Uses hand tools of the tradeFits and assembles jigs, fixtures, tools and dies. Sets up, runs off and tests dies to produce a product to specifications, tracing die difficulties to their source and correcting sameTear down, repairs and reassembles tooling on the bench or in the press as requiredHigh degree of precision and control in work where damage could be high and where muscular control and delicate touch are requiredAble to pull and set-up toolingMust have valid forklift operator's card (or be willing to be trained before starting job assignment)Does in-press P.M.'s as scheduledQUALIFICATIONS / REQUIREMENTSEducation:Completion of formal apprenticeship program with journeyman card or equivalent to 8 years' experienceExcellent time management skills with the ability to multi task and prioritizeExcellent problem-solving skills such as 8D and 5 WhysExcellent communication skills as evidenced in colleague relations, team skills, and have the ability to interface directly with the customer to resolve issuesAbility to work independently, self-starter with the ability to work in a fast-paced environmentExcellent attendance recordJob Type: Full-timeRequired experience:Tool and die maker: 4 yearsRequired education:High school or equivalentPHYSICAL DEMANDSThe physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
