Position Summary
This recruitment will be used to fill up to eight part-time (a maximum of 24 hours per week) Berry Crop Student Assistant positions for The Northwest Berry Program at Oregon State University (OSU).
The Northwest Berry program at Oregon State University provides statewide research on production and management of berry crops, including blueberry, blackberry, red and black raspberry, strawberry, and other small fruits. The overall goal of the research is to provide science-based support tools to foster productivity, quality, and resiliency of small fruits systems.
The Berry Crops Research Program is recruiting up to 8 students who will assist in the harvest and maintenance of various berry crop fields. All positions are located at the North Willamette Research and Extension Center (NWREC), Aurora, OR.
Position Duties
100% of duties will consist of picking berries, assisting with machine harvest, fertilizing plants, mowing, pruning, planting, hoeing or weed pulling, and recording data.
Students are an integral part of the team, and will have the opportunity to learn about research in berry production and plant sciences.
Minimum Qualifications

Must be academically enrolled in a high school, community college, or university and pursuing a program or course of study
Must meet Academic Standing Requirements; students on academic suspension are not eligible for employment
Must meet the applicable minimal enrollment standard
High School student: Regularly enrolled in a high school or participating in a home-schooling program
Undergraduate and post-baccalaureate student: 6 credit hours per term
Undergraduate international student: 12 credit hours per term*
Graduate student officially admitted to Graduate School: 5 credit hours per term
Graduate international student officially admitted to Graduate School: 9 credit hours per term*
International students may be allowed to carry fewer hours than specified above and still be considered “full-time” by the United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS). A reduced course load is approved by the Office of International Services (OIS), and must be provided to the Student Employment Center.
Additional Required Qualifications
Perform assigned tasks without close supervision
Capable of working outside and standing/walking for extended periods of time
Attention to detail
Ability to lift 25 lbs.
Student employees (but not all employees) may be selected to drive to offsite locations, as needed, at the request of the farm manager. Drivers must be over 18 years old and have successfully completed OSU’s required motor vehicle history check, possess and maintain a current, valid driver’s license in their state of residence, be determined to be position qualified and self-report convictions as per OSU Standard 576-056-0000et seq.12
Students who are under 18 years old are required to have passed a tractor safety certification
class prior to operating a tractor.

Experience with tractors (for students over 18)
Desire to learn about plant/ crop production
Working Conditions / Work Schedule
Occasionally we ask that students stay longer than eight hours to finish a task, but work will not exceed 40 hours/week during the summer and 20 hours/week while school is in session. Working hours may vary by program.
Work is performed outdoors in all weather conditions.
Student employees for this position will be working during the summer, but limited positions may also be available throughout the school year and during school breaks.
