Construction Project Accountant

We are a well-established specialty subcontractor in the commercial construction sector, focusing on interior finishes for large-scale projects across Salt Lake City. Our work supports general contractors and their teams on high-volume commercial builds, delivering specialized solutions in areas like flooring systems, late-stage interior elements (such as partitions, lockers, and safety fixtures), and custom window treatments. This division represents our largest and most active segment, involving coordination across numerous ongoing projects with a strong emphasis on timely financial processes to maintain healthy cash flow in a pay-when-paid environment.Day-to-Day Responsibilities In this role, the Construction Accountant will manage monthly pay application submissions to general contractors, ensuring every detail aligns precisely with contract specifications to avoid payment delays. You will collaborate closely with approximately 15 project managers overseeing around 200 active projects, handling billing, receivables, and related financial tracking specific to subcontractor operations. Additional duties include supporting the accounting team's efforts on project costing, compliance with industry requirements, and contributing to overall financial accuracy within a four-person specialized team (currently expanding due to recent growth needs). Required Skills and Experience Candidates must bring direct experience in construction accounting from the general contractor or subcontractor side-general accounting backgrounds typically do not translate effectively due to the unique billing cycles, lien processes, and pay-when-paid structures in this field. Familiarity with submitting and matching pay apps is essential, as inaccuracies can lead to significant 30+ day delays. Prior exposure to commercial construction projects is a must. No specific experience with our internal systems (Pro Contractor and Common Sense) is required, as training will be provided. Strong attention to detail, organizational skills, and the ability to thrive in a fast-paced team setting with high project volume are key.Compensation and Benefits The position offers a competitive base salary in the $70,000-$80,000 range with no bonus structure.
