CDL Spotter
Position Summary:
This position is responsible for the safe, efficient, and compliant movement of trailers to and from our Gilmer location. The CDL Spotter plays a critical role in maintaining trailer flow, ensuring on-time trailer availability, and upholding all DOT, OSHA, and company safety standards.
Essential Functions:
Safely shuttle trailers between Frito-Lay and the Gilmer facility.
Spot, position, and stage trailers accurately at designated docks or yard locations.
Ensure trailers are properly secured, chocked, and locked when required.
Communicate effectively with operations, warehouse, and dispatch personnel regarding trailer status and priorities.
Maintain awareness of yard traffic, pedestrians, and dock activity at all times.
Perform pre-trip and post-trip inspections of tractors and trailers to ensure safe operating condition.
Adhere to all DOT regulations, company safety policies, and customer safety requirements.
Report any accidents, incidents, near misses, equipment damage, or safety hazards immediately to a supervisor.
Maintain tractors and trailers in clean, safe working condition.
Report mechanical issues, defects, or maintenance needs promptly.
Complete all required logs, inspection reports, and documentation accurately and on time.
Maintain a clean and orderly yard and driving area free of obstructions.
Follow all company policies, customer rules, and site-specific procedures.
Work Environment:
Work is primarily performed outdoors in a yard and driving environment, with frequent exposure to varying weather conditions, including heat, cold, rain, and humidity.
The position requires operating tractors and trailers in active industrial yards and customer facilities with moving equipment, truck traffic, and pedestrians.
Employees may be exposed to loud noises, diesel fumes, dust, and vibration associated with vehicle operation and yard activity.
Work schedules may include nights, weekends, holidays, and extended hours to support a 24-hour operation.
The role requires prolonged periods of sitting while driving, as well as frequent climbing in and out of tractors, coupling and uncoupling trailers, and walking on uneven surfaces.
Strict adherence to safety procedures, PPE requirements, DOT regulations, and site-specific rules is required at all times.
Qualifications:
Valid CDL (Class A) with a clean driving record.
Prior experience as a yard spotter, shuttle driver, or local CDL driver preferred.
Knowledge of DOT regulations, safe driving practices, and yard safety procedures.
Ability to perform thorough pre-trip and post-trip inspections.
Strong attention to detail and commitment to safety.
Good communication skills and ability to work independently.
Dependable, punctual, and able to follow instructions precisely.
Comfortable working in a fast-paced, outdoor, and industrial environment, including night or weekend shifts as required.
