Applies proven technical methods to assignments, enabling metallurgical analysis activities that ensure high customer satisfaction by providing timely & actionable insights to requests for evaluation. Supports projects and project team assignments of moderate scope with limited guidance from supervision and engineers. Is involved with long-term thinking and planning for improvement. Applies experience and knowledge outside areas of expertise. Is a resource to the organization that can evaluate, select, and apply standard metallurgical techniques, procedures, and criteria, using judgment in making minor adaptations and modifications, while collaborating with Materials Engineers and/or Metallurgical Analysts when non-standard techniques or analysis are required.Essential Duties & Responsibilities:(These responsibilities are in addition to the responsibilities of a technician 1, 2 & 3)Conduct metallurgical analysis using various testing methods and equipment to evaluate the composition, structure, and properties of materials. Perform failure analysis of materials and components. Share insights within collaborative reviews to recommend root causeRecommends/creates new tests, systems and/or procedures using standard workRecommends and implement new technologies (hardware, software, equipment, product, processes)Troubleshoots complex equipment or product malfunctions, overseeing repairs and assisting with annual service contracts that ensure equipment health and calibration. May justify and procure capital equipmentInteracts with others within and external to Swagelok in an advanced manner; provides feedback to supervisor, chemists and project leaders, while maintaining detailed records of testing, findings, and experiments that are used prepare comprehensive reports for internal and external stakeholders. Makes significant contribution to the training of technicians, engineering co-ops, or entry-level engineers. Supports overall lab operations with respect to safety, which may include periodically checking the routine work of other technicians. Education and/or Work Experience Requirements:Required:2-year Associate’s degree in related field (chemistry, mechanical engineering technology, CAD or other technical fields) or equivalent work experience (1 year or basic training of metallurgical techniques)5+ years in related field. (minimum of 3 years of laboratory or technical expertise preferred)Demonstrates ability to complete major and complex assignments or parts of larger assignments. Advanced problem solving and decision making abilities. Excellent oral and excellent written communication. Demonstrates proficient communication, programming and troubleshooting skillsStrong abilities in the use of moderately complex technical tools and lab equipment and instrumentation. (Equipment may vary based on department). Uses and understands principles of moderately complex laboratory instruments to perform analyses.*(Chemical Technician only)Advanced metallurgical, corrosion and failure analysis concepts. *(Metallurgical Technician only)Good computer and typical office software skills. Commitment to safety protocols and guidelines. Willingness to learn and adapt to changing technologies and processes. Preferred:Knowledge of metallurgical principles, testing techniques, and analysis methods. Proficiency in using metallurgical testing equipment and software.
