Senior Full Stack Engineer (Builder) — HowTooLocation: Reno, NVAbout HowTooHowToo is building the operating system for vehicle ownership. Our flagship product, Orion, is a live AI mechanic that helps people diagnose vehicle problems, navigate repairs and upgrades, and find the exact parts they need. We're combining AI-powered diagnostics, repair guidance, an extensive automotive parts marketplace, and intelligent workflows into a single seamless experience. We've recently raised our pre-seed round, are well-funded and VC-backed, and are seeing our user base grow 4x month-over-month. We're a small, ambitious team building a product with the potential to fundamentally change how people maintain, repair, and upgrade their vehicles.
The Role:
We're looking for a talented, versatile Senior Full Stack Engineer who loves building things.
This isn't a narrowly defined frontend or backend position. You'll work across the entire stack, taking ownership of features from initial design through production deployment.
You'll help build everything from user-facing product experiences to APIs, data systems, AI-powered workflows, and cloud infrastructure.
We're looking for someone who can move quickly, solve difficult problems independently, and thrive in a startup where priorities evolve and your work makes an immediate impact.
What You'll Work OnFull-stack product development: Build and improve features using Next.js, React, Node.js, and GraphQL.Backend architecture and APIs: Develop performant GraphQL services that connect our applications, databases, AI systems, and external integrations.
AI-powered experiences: Help build and evolve Orion, our AI mechanic, including diagnostics, repair guidance, and intelligent workflows.
Automotive data and search: Build systems for vehicle data, parts matching, catalog search, and structured automotive information.
Content and data pipelines: Develop ingestion and processing systems that power our AI-generated repair guides and other platform capabilities.
Cloud infrastructure: Work with AWS, serverless services, databases, and supporting infrastructure.
Performance and reliability: Identify bottlenecks, troubleshoot issues across the stack, and continuously improve scalability and performance.
End-to-end ownership: Take ideas from concept to launch, iterate based on real user feedback, and ship meaningful improvements.
What We're Looking For:
Approximately 4–8 years of professional software engineering experience.
Experience shipping real products and features independently, from frontend through backend and production.
Strong experience with modern JavaScript/TypeScript, React, Node.js, and relational databases.
Familiarity with GraphQL or comparable API architectures.
Comfortable working across frontend, backend, data, and infrastructure.
Strong debugging and problem-solving skills, including the ability to investigate issues across multiple layers of a system.
A builder's mindset: you enjoy creating products, figuring things out, and making things work.
Comfortable operating in a fast-moving environment where requirements and priorities evolve.
Able to take ownership of problems without needing detailed instructions.
Curious about AI and excited to learn how to apply it to real products. Prior professional AI experience is not required.
Bias toward shipping, learning, and iterating rather than overengineering.
