Job Summary
We are seeking an experienced Mainframe IMS System Programmer responsible for installation, configuration, customization, maintenance, and support of IBM IMS (Information Management System) environments on the z/OS mainframe platform. The role ensures system stability, performance optimization, database integrity, and high availability of IMS subsystems while supporting enterprise application environments.
Must-Have Technical Skills
IMS installation, configuration, and subsystem maintenance
RECON dataset management and database recovery control
GEN processes including ACBGEN, PSBGEN, and DBDGEN
DBRC setup, management, and operations
Managing IMS logs including OLDS and SLDS
IMS connectivity configuration (IMS Connect, ODBM, JDBC)
Applying IMS maintenance using SMP/E
IMS performance monitoring and tuning
Key Responsibilities
System Installation & Maintenance
Install, configure, and maintain IMS DB and TM subsystems and related components
Perform system upgrades, migrations, APAR/PTF maintenance using SMP/E
Ensure compatibility between IMS, z/OS, DB2, CICS, and related products
Manage IMS environments and ensure system stability
Performance & Capacity Management
Monitor IMS performance and tune system parameters
Perform capacity planning and system growth analysis
Use tools such as OMEGAMON, Mainview, and RMF for performance monitoring
System Support & Troubleshooting
Provide Level 3 support for IMS system incidents and production issues
Diagnose and resolve database recovery, log, and buffer pool issues
Work with IBM support for problem resolution and patch implementation
Database Administration Support
Support IMS DBA teams with DBD, PSB, and ACBGEN processes
Maintain RECON datasets and ensure proper backup and recovery procedures
Manage IMS utilities including DFSURGU0, DFSURWF0, and HALDB
Automation & Integration
Develop automation scripts using REXX, CLIST, and JCL
Integrate IMS with middleware such as MQ, IMS Connect, and scheduling tools
Support modernization initiatives such as IMS Open Database and API integration
Disaster Recovery & Compliance
Participate in disaster recovery planning, testing, and documentation
Ensure compliance with change management and audit requirements
Documentation & Collaboration
Maintain system documentation and configuration records
Collaborate with DBAs, developers, and infrastructure teams
Mentor junior system programmers
Required Skills & Experience
Strong experience with IMS DB and TM subsystem administration
Expertise in RECON management and DBRC operations
Experience with SMP/E maintenance and patch implementation
Strong knowledge of z/OS, JCL, VSAM, and mainframe architecture
Experience with IMS utilities and performance tuning
Knowledge of automation using REXX, CLIST, or JCL
Preferred Skills
Experience with IMS Connect, ODBM, JDBC integration
Familiarity with z/OSMF, z/OS Connect EE, and API enablement
Knowledge of DFSMS and mainframe storage management
Experience with monitoring tools such as OMEGAMON or Mainview
Knowledge of ITIL processes and enterprise support environments
Education
Bachelor’s degree or higher in Computer Science, Engineering, or related field
Pay: $60.00 - $82.00 per hour
Expected hours: 40.0 per week
Work Location: In person
