Medical Laboratory Technician
Scope Of PositionResponsible for accurate performance of qualitative and quantitative analyses on patient specimens (including blood, body fluids, culture material, feces, etc.) using a variety of analytical techniques andresulting out with confidence a quality Laboratory result. This position reports to the Outreach Technologist and Support Services Manager.ResponsibilitiesCollects and prepares samples for analysis identifying and using appropriate technique and equipment for patient population served including: infant, child, adolescent, adult, and older adult. Stores and transportssamples as prescribed by standards in laboratory procedure manuals.Perform Hematological, Chemical, Serological, Microbiological, Clinical Microscopy and Transfusion procedures as defined in procedure manuals in each laboratory section within scope of ability.Performs set-ups, preventive maintenance, and general care of Laboratory equipment as outlined in departmental procedure manuals.Select, prepare and use appropriate control materials to monitor assays.Evaluate validity of results, based on established protocols, referring discrepancies to a Medical Technologist, Supervisor, or Manager.Promotes effective working relationships and works effectively as part of the shift "team" to facilitate the shift's ability to meet its goals and objectives. Maintains competency in at least 1 additional area of the laboratory.Maintains current knowledge of and employs proper application of Hospital Information Systems.Keeps current on advances in Laboratory Services. Participates in and shares continuing education to maintain professional development and competency for the patient population served including: neonate, infant, child, adolescent, adult, and older adult patients.Performs all other duties as assigned.RequirementsGood communication skills.Ability to adapt in a dynamic environment including exposure to all patient elements, i.e., blood borne pathogens, physical requirements: lifting, and caring of supplies, standing, walking and bending.Ability to interact with internal as well as external customers with tact and confidentiality.Ability to approach clinical responsibilities for patient care with regard to the laboratories vision, i.e., by providing high quality, cost effective and timely diagnostic/therapeutic services through the effective utilization of human resources and state-of-the-art technologists.MLT(ASCP) Registration.Associate’s Degree in a Laboratory ScienceMust have basic computer skills and ability to access internet and other programs applicable to Waterbury Hospital procedures.Perform automated functions that fall within job responsibility.
