Chief Financial Officer
Position Summary
The Chief Financial Officer (CFO) serves as a strategic partner to the CEO and executive leadership team, providing vision, leadership, and oversight of the organization’s financial strategy and operations. The CFO ensures the long-term financial sustainability of the organization while supporting its mission, values, and strategic goals. This role oversees all financial functions, including budgeting, accounting, annual audits, grants management, financial reporting, compliance, risk management, and investment oversight.
Key Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership
Serve as a key member of the executive leadership team, contributing to organizational strategy and decision-making.
Provide financial analysis and insights to support strategic planning, program growth, and resource allocation.
Partner with the CEO and Board of Directors (especially the Finance Committee) to ensure sound fiscal governance.
Financial Management & Oversight
Oversee all accounting, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management.
Ensure timely and accurate financial statements in accordance with GAAP and non-profit accounting standards.
Lead the annual budgeting process and monitor performance against approved budgets.
Develop and maintain financial policies, procedures, and internal controls.
Compliance, Risk, and Audit
Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local regulations, including IRS, grantor, and funder requirements.
Oversee annual audits and serve as the primary liaison with external auditors.
Monitor financial risk and implement mitigation strategies to protect organizational assets.
Ensure appropriate insurance coverage and financial safeguards are in place.
Grants & Funding Support
Oversee financial aspects of grants, contracts, and restricted funds, ensuring proper tracking, reporting, and compliance.
Partner with development and program teams to support funding proposals, budgets, and financial reporting to funders.
Ensure transparency and accountability in the use of donor and grant funds.
Team Leadership & Operations
Lead, mentor, and develop a high-performing finance team.
Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Evaluate and improve financial systems and technology to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
Qualifications
Required
Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, Business Administration, or a related field.
Minimum of 8–10 years of progressive financial leadership experience, preferably in a non-profit organization.
Strong knowledge of non-profit accounting, GAAP, audits, and compliance requirements.
Demonstrated experience working with Boards of Directors and Finance/Audit Committees.
Proven ability to lead teams and manage complex financial operations.
Preferred
CPA, MBA, or other advanced financial credential.
Experience with grants management, government contracts, and restricted funding.
Familiarity with non-profit financial systems and donor/grants management software.
