Technical Writer – Mechanical & Controls

Balance Technology Inc. is a leading manufacturer of precision measurement and testing equipment based near Ann Arbor, Michigan. We are seeking a Technical Writer to work alongside our builders and engineers to create the manuals, guides, and reports that keep our machines running.In this role, you will translate electrical schematics and machine control logic into clear, actionable documentation for engineers, operators, and customers. Your work ensures every machine we ship is fully understood, operable, and supportable.Key ResponsibilitiesShop Floor Collaboration: Work directly with machine builders and controls engineers to gather technical specifications and verify machine operationTechnical Documentation: Develop and maintain manuals, troubleshooting guides, and SOPs using Adobe FrameMakerSchematic Translation: Translate electrical schematics and mechanical drawings into clear setup and maintenance instructionsVisual Documentation: Create diagrams and annotated visuals to illustrate mechanical and electrical assembliesHands-on Validation: Test documentation against actual machines to ensure accuracy prior to shipmentDocument Control: Maintain versioning and revision tracking within the content management systemTechnical Sales Support: Assist in developing technical product sheets and supporting materialsQualificationsEducation: Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Industrial Technology, Technical Communication, or a related fieldExperience: 3–5 years in manufacturing, industrial automation, or similar environmentTechnical Communication: Ability to take complex machine functions and explain them clearly for manuals and product guidesSkills & Tools:Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics and mechanical drawingsProficiency with Adobe FrameMaker and Microsoft OfficeExperience with Adobe Creative Suite (Illustrator, InDesign, Acrobat)Familiarity with document control/version management systemsStrong attention to detail and technical accuracyAbility to collaborate with cross-functional engineering teamsNice to Have:Experience with PLC-controlled equipmentBackground in custom machinery or industrial systemsExperience documenting electromechanical assembliesWork Details & BenefitsJob Type: Full-timeLocation: Whitmore Lake, MI (On-site)Benefits:401(k) with company matchHealth, dental, and vision insuranceHealth Savings Account (HSA)Life insurancePaid time off
