Quality Control Technician – Mine Hoisting/Fabrication & Field (Travel Required)OJ Industries, a Division of Miller Contracting | Carrier Mills, ILOverviewMiller Contracting is hiring a Mechanical Technician to support underground mining and hoisting equipment operations in a hands-on, field-based role.This position focuses on servicing, repairing, inspecting, and installing hoisting and mechanical systems across active mining and industrial project sites. You will work directly alongside field crews in underground environments supporting production, maintenance, and project execution.This is a travel-based role requiring strong mechanical ability, troubleshooting skills, and willingness to work in demanding field environments.Key ResponsibilitiesFabrication & Field Quality Inspections• Service, maintain, and repair hoisting equipment and mechanical systems• Replace and align hoist motors and gearboxes using dial indicators and laser alignment equipment• Service and troubleshoot hydraulic braking systems• Inspect and repair hoist conveyances• Perform shaft and headframe inspections• Replace, repair, and erect structural steel• Travel to job sites to support active projects• Work in underground mining environments and active construction sitesTroubleshooting & Repairs• Diagnose and troubleshoot mechanical and hydraulic issues• Perform repairs and adjustments to maintain safe and efficient equipment operation• Identify issues early and communicate findings with supervisors and crews• Support preventative maintenance and field repairs as neededGeneral Mechanical Support• Apply strong mechanical knowledge across a variety of hoisting systems and equipment• Assist with installation and commissioning of hoisting equipment• Support safe and efficient project execution in the field• Follow all company, MSHA, and site-specific safety proceduresWhat This Role Is• Hands-on and field-based• Focused on production, maintenance, and mechanical troubleshooting• Working directly alongside crews in underground and industrial environments• Travel-heavy with exposure to multiple active project sitesWhat This Role Is Not• Not a shop-only position• Not limited to preventative maintenance only• Not an office or coordination-focused roleRequired Qualifications• Experience working with hoisting systems, heavy mining equipment, industrial maintenance, or related mechanical systems• Strong mechanical aptitude and troubleshooting ability• Knowledge of hydraulics and mechanical systems• Ability to work in underground and field environments• Willingness to travel and stay overnight as needed• Valid driver’s licensePreferred Qualifications• Experience servicing or repairing hoisting equipment• Ability to read and interpret drawings and hydraulic schematics• Welding or fabrication experience• MSHA certification (or willingness to obtain)Work Environment & Travel• Field-based role with regular travel to project sites• Exposure to underground mining and industrial construction environments• Overnight travel and multi-week project assignments may be requiredCompensation & Benefits• $28.00 – $34.00/hour, based on experience• Weekly pay• $150/day non-taxable per diem when assigned to travel-based projects• Medical, dental, and vision insurance• 401(k) with company match• Paid time off and holidays• Company-paid life insuranceWhy Miller ContractingMiller Contracting operates as a “Bottom Up” organization.
