This job posting may be closed at any time without notice. *** Upon hire, starting rate will be $19.43/hour***The City of Montebello is seeking customer service-driven, motivated individuals interested in pursuing a career in law enforcement to join the Police Department as a Police Cadet.The philosophy of the Cadet program is to prepare the Cadet for future employment in law enforcement. To accomplish this goal and to give Cadets a broader perspective of police work, the Cadets will work on various assignments within the department.This is a temporary, unclassified, part-time position. The position is exempt from Civil Service Rules and Regulations; therefore, Police Cadets may be discharged by the Chief of Police without a right of appeal. EXAMPLE OF DUTIES General parking enforcement and issuance of parking citationsPerforming traffic controlPreparing reports for the impounding of vehiclesInvestigating and writing a selected variety of crime and traffic collision reports when no suspect is presentCollecting and preserving evidenceAppearing and testifying in courtProviding information and assistance to the public at the front counterAnswering telephone requests for police servicesCollecting money for public requests or documentsPerforming clerical assignments and providing support for department personnelProcessing reports and maintaining records and filesPreparing misdemeanor cases for filing with the District AttorneyServing subpoenasFingerprintingPerforming routine jail functions such as custodial checks on inmates, searches, booking, fingerprinting, and other necessary jail dutiesPerforming crossing guard dutiesConducting tours of city facilitiesMaintaining police vehiclesPerforming other related duties as assignedPatrol city parks and enforce state and municipal lawsOther Job-Related Duties: Perform related duties and responsibilities as assigned.Job-related and Essential Functions: Knowledge of: Modern office practices, methods, and computer equipment and software.English usage, spelling, vocabulary, grammar, and punctuation.Safe driving principles and practices.Ability to: Learn pertinent Federal, State, and local laws, Penal and Vehicle codes and regulations, including administrative and departmental policies and procedures, and police terminology.Maintain files alphabetically, numerically, or by subject matter.Handle multiple concurrent tasks with numerous interruptions.Utilize independent judgment involving the interpretation of instructions and performance of assigned duties.Assist the public with diplomacy and tact.Deal constructively with conflict. Communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in writing.Must be available to work nights, weekends, and holidays.Ability to lift 50lbs SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION Examination: Candidates deemed most qualified will be invited to an oral board interview. Failure of the interview exam will remove the candidate from further consideration. Candidates who successfully pass the oral will have to complete a full background investigation which will include a polygraph and a medical exam. A Command Oral Exam will also be had prior to appointment.Oral Board Interview: Candidates who successfully pass will be invited to an Oral Board Interview. Candidates who do not pass the Oral Board Interview will be disqualified from the hiring and selection process. Those who have achieved the highest passing scores will be invited to participate in the background process.Background: All applicants who successfully pass the oral board interview and polygraph exam and are selected to move forward in the hiring and selection process must complete an extensive background investigation. The background will comply with the California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) guidelines.
