This position is specific to seasonal (summer) camps. Positions may be available for winter or spring camp programs also (TBD). Camps (Seasonal/Summer): Working with children ages 5-11 in a Day Camp Program. Positions are in effect from mid-May through mid-August, with weekends off. This includes staff training (some evenings after 4pm in mid/late May & early June), and 8-10 weekly camp sessions (2025: June 2 - Aug 1, excluding the week of Independence Day). During sessions, Camp staff typically work Monday-Friday, for approximately 10 hours per day, usually between the hours of 7am-6pm (start/end times may vary). Positions may be required to alternate between work sites on a weekly basis (Statesville, Troutman, or Mooresville). Some positions may be available to work on a "substitute" or "as needed" basis (discussed prior to employment; hours not guaranteed).Examples of DutiesESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:Counselors are responsible for leading/implementing activities for the participants, such as games, crafts, environmental education programs, and if applicable, swimming, short hikes, etc. Counselors are also responsible for participant supervision, behavior management, customer communication, and program management/organization. Includes daily record keeping, maintaining a clean work environment, good relations with the public and other staff members, the safety and welfare of participants, maintaining morale and a motivated atmosphere, as well as other duties assigned by the director/coordinator. All seasonal camp staff are responsible for daily facility operations, including opening procedures, camper check-in procedures, custodial restroom care, camper check-out procedures, and closing procedures.ADDITIONAL FUNCTIONS:Performs other related work as required.KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, & ABILITIES:Leadership and Supervision: Ability to work as a team to safely supervise campers. Ensures adherence to camp policies, procedures, and schedules, fostering a positive and productive work environment.Program Implementation and Management: Highly organized, with the ability to design, execute, and adapt daily camp activities (games, crafts, environmental education, swimming, hiking, etc.) to meet the diverse needs and interests of campers while ensuring safety and enjoyment.Behavior Management and Camper Supervision: Skilled in managing camper behavior with patience and professionalism. Maintains a positive atmosphere while ensuring camper safety, discipline, and overall well-being.Communication and Customer Service: Excellent verbal and written communication skills for interacting with campers, staff, parents, and other stakeholders. Able to relay important information, updates, and changes clearly and respectfully.Record Keeping and Administrative Skills: Strong attention to detail with the ability to maintain accurate records, including camper information, attendance, incident reports, and other required documentation.Transportation and Safety: Responsible for safely operating vehicles for camper transportation. Ensures the safety and security of all campers during transport and throughout camp activities.Camp Facility Maintenance: Ability to maintain a clean, safe, and organized camp environment. Participate in daily opening and closing procedures, ensures proper custodial care of facilities, and assists with camp setup and breakdown tasks.Collaboration and Teamwork: Works effectively with the Program Specialist, camp staff, and other stakeholders to ensure smooth operations and successful program delivery. Actively contributes to a team-based environment.Flexibility and Adaptability: Capable of adjusting to changes such as weather, camper needs, or shifting schedules, while maintaining camp flow and morale. Willing to take on new responsibilities to ensure the camp's success.Safety and Risk Management: Knowledge of camp safety protocols and procedures. Ability to recognize and address potential risks, ensuring the health and safety of both campers and staff at all times.Typical QualificationsEDUCATION/EXPERIENCE "REQUIREMENTS":Must be at least 18 years old (prefer High School graduate or equivalent) some positions require age 21 or older.For summer camps, preference will be given to applicants who possess good swimming ability, and experience or desire to work with youth is required. Maintains other trainings as required. Must be reliable, punctual, and work well with others. Position requires good judgment to ensure the program is run safely and efficiently.Lead Counselor Opportunity:Candidates who interview for a Camp Counselor role may be considered for a Lead Camp Counselor Role.
