Job Description:
Continuous Monitoring: Constantly monitoring vital signs, cardiac rhythms (ECG/telemetry), oxygen saturation, and hemodynamics (blood pressure via arterial lines).
Comprehensive Assessments: Performing rigorous head-to-toe assessments, often every 1–2 hours, including detailed neurological checks (Glasgow Coma Scale), respiratory assessments, and pain/sedation scales.
Strict I&O: Meticulously tracking Intake and Output (I&O), often measuring urine output and IV fluids hourly to ensure kidney function and fluid balance.
High-Alert Medications: Administering potent, fast-acting intravenous (IV) medications, such as vasoactive drips (e.g., Levophed, Epinephrine to support blood pressure), sedatives (e.g., Propofol, Precedex), paralytics, and continuous insulin or heparin drips.
Titration: Independently adjusting (titrating) the dosage of these continuous IV infusions based on the patient's real-time vital signs and hospital protocols.
Emergency Meds: Rapidly administering emergency medications during codes or rapid response situations.
Mechanical Ventilation: Caring for intubated patients or those with tracheostomies, managing ventilator settings, suctioning airways, and providing oral care to prevent ventilator-associated pneumonia (VAP).
Invasive Lines: Managing, dressing, and monitoring central venous catheters (CVCs), PICC lines, arterial lines, Swan-Ganz catheters, and chest tubes.
Advanced Therapies: Assisting with or managing Continuous Renal Replacement Therapy (CRRT/dialysis), intra-aortic balloon pumps (IABP), or sometimes Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO).
