Job Title: Java Developer - Tech LeadStart Date: ASAPDuration: 6 months contractLocation: Remote within the EUAllocation: 100% full time + On Call Rota - 7-10 days a month to cover critical production issues outside of business hours (18h-09h) and weekends.Job SummaryIn this role, you will design, develop, and maintain scalable Java-based RESTful web services, taking ownership of architectural decisions and complex troubleshooting. Beyond hands-on coding and on-call support duties, you will drive engineering excellence by conducting code reviews, optimizing data performance (via SQL and ElasticSearch), and utilizing monitoring tools like Grafana and NewRelic. Additionally, you will collaborate across teams to ensure security compliance, integrate OpenAPI documentation, and continuously evaluate emerging technologies to improve the overall system architecture.Key Responsibilities & Deliverables:Engineering & DevelopmentMaintain, enhance, and operate UDD — including on-call dutiesDesign and implement new REST APIs aligned with OpenAPI/Swagger standardsImplement and optimise SQL queries for efficient data retrieval and manipulationLeverage ElasticSearch to offload the application and enhance search performanceResolve support tickets and complex technical issues in a timely mannerObservability & PerformanceUse monitoring tools (NewRelic, Grafana, Kibana) to **proactively** identify bottlenecks and performance regressionsPropose and implement solutions to address identified issues before they impact marketsEnsure system reliability across the full device lifecycle (registration, replacement, upgrade, trade-in, end-of-life)Technical LeadershipLead larger initiatives end-to-end: planning, task delegation, execution, and trade-off managementProvide technical estimations for new features and market requestsDrive architectural and design decisions for scalability and long-term system alignmentConduct code reviews and recommend refactoring and performance improvementsImprove current development flows and practices across the teamMarket & Stakeholder SupportProvide RFIs (Requests for Information) to markets — typically involving codebase and/or data analysis to answer market-specific questionsCollaborate with cross-functional teams to understand requirements and propose solutionsServe as a trusted technical point of contact for market-facing queriesMentoring & StandardsMentor junior and mid-level developers through code reviews and knowledge sharingEnsure compliance with coding standards, best practices, and security guidelinesStay up to date with industry trends and share relevant knowledge with the teamRequired Skills & Competencies:Proven experience as a Senior Java Developer or similar role5+ years of experience in Java development and popular frameworksDemonstrated ability to lead technical delivery on a project or workstream, including scoping, estimation, and risk identificationHands-on experience with Spring Boot, JPA, and Hibernate ORMSolid understanding of web services (REST) and experience developing APIsExperience with containerisation using Docker or PodmanProficient in version control systems like GitStrong knowledge of SQL and experience with database optimisationFamiliarity with front-end technologies like TypeScript, JavaScript, HTML, XML, and JSONKnowledge of optimisation and monitoring tools like ElasticSearch, NewRelic, Grafana, and Kibana is a plusKnowledge of HibernateSearch and Spring Batch is a plusKnowledge of Maven and Gradle is a plus; Scala is a plusFMCG experience is a plusSoft Skills:Excellent problem-solving and troubleshooting skillsCurious by nature and open-mindedAbility to provide outstanding customer service, be a good listener, work well with others, and be trusted by colleaguesStrong communication and collaboration skills to work efficiently within a team and across departmentsDegree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or equivalent combination of relevant education and experienceFluent in English
