General Surgeon (North Hawaii Community Hospital, Big Island)

General Surgeon PositionNorth Hawaii Community Hospital (NHCH) is seeking a skilled and compassionate General Surgeon to provide primary surgical and ongoing patient care in alignment with our mission, vision, and values. This role is responsible for performing surgical procedures to correct deformities, repair injuries, and restore or improve patient function. The ideal candidate demonstrates the highest standards of ethical and professional conduct while delivering exceptional care to our community.Primary ResponsibilitiesConducts patient examinations to assess medical conditions and determine surgical risk.Reviews medical history, medications, allergies, and physical condition to assess the most appropriate surgical or treatment plan.Diagnoses and treats diseases, injuries, and deformities using invasive, minimally invasive, or non-invasive surgical methods.Orders, interprets, and utilizes diagnostic tests in creating treatment plans.Prescribes pre- and post-operative treatments, including medications, diets, and wound-care procedures.Communicates clearly with patients and families regarding diagnoses, test results, and plan-of-care decisions.Leads and collaborates with an interdisciplinary care team to optimize patient outcomes.Refers patients to specialists or other practitioners when appropriate.Monitors patient progress, documents all care activity, and ensures compliance with NHCH, regulatory, and governmental guidelines.Collaborates with practice management to support accurate billing, coding, and CPT documentation.Provides surgical consultation and support to fellow surgeons and physicians.Participates in hospital on-call coverage and responds timely to consults and emergencies.Contributes to quality improvement initiatives, medical staff committees, and development of clinical protocols.Demonstrates and upholds QHS core values of compassion, aloha, respect, and excellence.Ensures patient confidentiality in compliance with HIPAA and organizational policies.Maintains positive and professional relationships with patients, families, staff, and colleagues.Manages OR time efficiently and supports workflow of surgical services.Performs other duties as assigned.Performance Requirements (Knowledge, Skills & Abilities)Broad knowledge of diagnostic and therapeutic surgical principles, including pathology, drug therapies, and preventive care.Strong clinical judgment with the ability to evaluate complex medical information and determine optimal surgical solutions.Excellent motor skills and handeye coordination for effective surgical instrument use.Ability to perform under pressure, including emergency situations and extended or irregular hours.Effective leadership skills to guide interdisciplinary medical staff.Exceptional written and verbal communication, listening abilities, and interpersonal skills.Ability to interact respectfully and effectively with diverse populations.Commitment to continuous professional improvement, including required CME.Minimum QualificationsGraduate of an accredited School of Medicine or ECFMG certification.Board certified or board eligible in General Surgery.Board eligible candidates must achieve certification within timelines set by NHCH medical staff bylaws.Current, valid, and unrestricted license to practice medicine in the State of Hawai'i.Minimum of 5 years of clinical/surgical experience.Base salary begins at $475,449/year with opportunity for productivity and quality incentives.
