Cost Accountant

Sterling Search Partners is helping a Birmingham client with its search for a Cost Accountant. The Cost Accountant is responsible for analyzing costs of production, inventory, labor, and operations to help management make informed financial decisions. This role is especially critical in manufacturing, distribution, and service businesses with complex cost structures.Key Responsibilities1. Cost Analysis & ReportingAnalyze production costs, raw materials, labor, and overheadPrepare detailed cost reports and variance analysis (actual vs. budget)Identify cost-saving opportunities and inefficiencies2. Inventory AccountingTrack inventory valuation (FIFO, LIFO, weighted average)Monitor and reconcile inventory accountsWork closely with operations on cycle counts and physical inventories3. Budgeting & ForecastingAssist in developing annual budgets and forecastsAnalyze cost trends and recommend adjustmentsSupport financial planning efforts4. Standard CostingDevelop and maintain standard costs for products/servicesAnalyze variances (material, labor, overhead)Update standards based on operational changes5. Process ImprovementIdentify opportunities to reduce costs and improve marginsPartner with operations, procurement, and leadershipSupport automation or system improvements6. Compliance & ControlsEnsure adherence to accounting standards (GAAP)Maintain internal controls over cost accounting processesAssist with auditsQualificationsBachelor’s degree in Accounting or Finance2–5+ years of accounting or cost accounting experienceStrong Excel skills (pivot tables, modeling)Experience with ERP systems
