Whatcom County Public Works is recruiting to fill one Road Maintenance Worker position. This position works in the Maintenance & Operations division at the Central Shop, 901 West Smith Road, Bellingham. Road Maintenance Workers work on a variety of crews helping ensure the safety of citizens by performing maintenance of roadways, and road structures including, bridges and ferry docks. Crew assignments may also include cleaning and maintaining ditches and culverts to ensure proper stormwater drainage systems or performing roadside vegetation maintenance, including removal of hazardous trees and mowing and performing other labor intensive duties, and flagging. Key duties include: Providing traffic control sign placement and flagging to guide public safely through work zones. Digging ditches, raking asphalt, patching potholes, clearing brush and operating chainsaws. Providing essential roadway emergency services during snow, floods or other severe weather events. Operating a variety of equipment and machinery, including dump trucks, power sweepers and mowers. Position works Monday - Friday 7:30 am to 4:00 pm. In the summer months the hours are Monday - Thursday, 6:00 AM - 4:30 PM. Supervisor: Road Crew Leader Public Works Seniority Division: Central Shop Salary Range: $24.39 - $36.99 per hour. Hiring rate depends on qualifications. Maintenance and Operations has established wage scales for all positions. Hiring rate is typically step 1 - 2 of the posted salary range, depending on experience and subject to required approvals. The targeted hiring rate is set to allow for employees' growth within the role. This position receives annual pay increases to the next step in the associated salary range (apx. 3.8%) subject to satisfactory performance, in addition to any negotiated Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA). The Road Maintenance Worker is an entry-level position. The Maintenance and Operations Division is covered by a collective bargaining agreement that awards promotional priority to the qualified employee with the most seniority. This can mean several years of primary assignment to flagging and general labor duties. This position also has 13 paid holidays, paid vacation starting at 96 hours per year, and paid sick leave at 96 hours per year. Benefit premiums are fully paid by the employer for employees and their dependents. Requires two years of recent work experience in any one or combination of the following areas: construction, road maintenance, logging, landscaping, traffic control, vehicle and equipment maintenance or other related field that directly involves the skills required to operate equipment, use hand and power tools, and perform manual labor common to road maintenance and construction. Must possess a certified Washington State Flagging and Traffic Control Card at time of hire. Must have a driving record that meets County standards. Must have or be willing to obtain a Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL). We can hire you without a CDL, and will provide training to obtain your CDL. Must pass federally mandated Department of Transportation Commercial Driver's License (CDL) random drug and alcohol tests. Must be eligible to cross between the United States and Canada.
